The Oklahoma Sooners posted a 34-20 regular season record leading up to the post season. Now poised to take on the rest of the Big 12 for the title of Conference Champion, action starts Wednesday in Oklahoma City. However, a handful of Sooners will be carrying conference honors into the tournament.
Releasing individual awards as well as declaring the All-Big 12 Team, several Sooners found themselves on the list. In terms of individual honors, Brylie Ware took home Newcomer of the Year. Behind a .316 batting average to go alongside five homeruns and 34 runs scored, Ware was also tabbed All-Conference First Team as the designated hitter.
He’s joined by center fielder, Steele Walker as the only two Sooners on the All-Big 12 First Team. The sophomore followed up an All-Freshman Team appearance with a team-leading .341 batting average with fifteen doubles and eight homers on the year. Clearly, the effort has not gone unnoticed by those around the league.
Putting on a bit of strength in the off-season, Renae Martinez showed visible improvements on the field. As the catcher, Martinez earned a spot on the All-Big 12 Second Team. Another senior in right-handed pitcher, JB Olson joins Martinez on the Second Team.
Last but certainly not least, Brandon Zaragoza landed on the All-Freshman Team after holding down the shortstop position. Largely regarded as the most difficult position to play, the freshman recorded a fielding percentage of .975 throughout the year. He’ll likely be leaned on moving forward during his career.
Five other Sooners earned Honorable Mentions:
