The Oklahoma Sooners have had quite a few dominant players come through the ranks on the NCAA Softball circuit. While most of those have played inside the circle, it appears as though the trends are changing. Staring with the likes of Shelby Pendley before being passed on to Lauren Chamberlain, a new face has emerged. Through two season in Norman, Shay Knighten continues to impress delivering big plays in big moments.
Now the sophomore first baseman has earned yet another nomination for a prestigious award. After being named the Women’s College World Series Most Outstanding player, Knighten is now up for an ESPY. Looking to take home the honor of Best Championship Performance, the decision will be made on July 12th.
During the Women’s College World Series, the Sooner standout clocked a .350 batting average. Helping Oklahoma to an undefeated championship record this year in Oklahoma City, Knighten scored four runs. In route to the title, the sophomore also knocked two doubles alongside a homerun and six runs batted in.
Her biggest moment came in game one of the championship series. In the 17 inning marathon, Knighten’s long ball over the fence broke the tie which eventually proved to be the edge OU needed over Florida. Again in game two, Knighten delivered a monster play. Trailing 3-2 with the bases loaded, the playmaker sent a bases clearing hit to center field. The hit once again provided a lead that the Sooners would ride to victory.
The ESPY nomination marks the first for a Sooner player since Blake Griffin and Sam Bradford were up for an award in 2009.
