Run-Rules are a part of the game of college softball. For some teams they are more common than others and Oklahoma just so happens to be one of those teams.
The Sooners are hosting the OG&E Tournament this weekend and showed zero mercy in their opener against Illinois State on Friday afternoon. Oklahoma used a seven-run opening frame and another dominating performance from Paige Parker to dismantle the Redbirds 9-0 in a run-rule shortened five inning game.
Parker allowed just one hit and struckout five ISU batters, in six innings of work, to pick up her 9th win of the season. She was aided by an offenses that tormented Redbird pitchers all afternoon. The Sooners scored runs in each of the first three innings and had were threatening in the 4th.
Freshman Jocelyn Alo opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI single that scored Nicole Mendes. Caleigh Clifton then drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in Sydney Romero and from that point the hit parade was on. In all, 10 batters went to the plate for the Sooners in the bottom of the first with seven of them ultimately scoring a run.
Alo would take advantage of an error to score again in the second and Kelsie Arnold would cross home plate in the third to give Oklahoma their nine runs. It was OU’s second consecutive run-rule victory and second consecutive shutout. The Sooners will play Indiana in their second game of the day with a first pitch set around 5:00 PM.
