While most fans are wondering what the future holds for the current reigning Heisman winner, others are preparing for the upcoming NFL Draft. As a redshirt junior, Cody Ford opted to forgo a senior season dropping his name in the hat for the evaluation at the next level. As an offensive lineman, a premium has been put on the position and the college star remains a top prospect.
In the most recent mock draft release, CBS believes the Oklahoma Sooner will be selected with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Currently, the pick belongs to the Minnesota Vikings. Hoping to protect the major investment that Kirk Cousins is at the quarterback position, it makes sense for the organization to select an offensive lineman this year. Of course, nothing is set in stone and we have yet to see the numbers posted at the combine.
Regardless, Ford proved to be a force in the trenches. Moving defenders off the line, the tackle displayed a rare combination of strength and balance not often seen in players of this size. Even though there is one weak point in his game, Ford’s coachability make him an easy selection for any GM in my opinion. Developing from a 3-star recruit into a potential first round speaks volumes of this kid.
For now, it appears as though Ford will be the first Sooner selected in the draft and maybe the only first rounder.
