Mariah Lopez emerged as a top candidate to lead the Oklahoma Sooners to the WCWS after patiently waiting behind Paige Parker. Stepping into the circle to start the season, the junior delivered numerous wins. However, the right-handed hurler found herself slipping behind a few others including All-American Giselle Juarez late in the year.
Despite making 29 appearances through the duration of the season and compiling a 19-1 record, Lopez decided to enter the transfer portal. Sporting a 1.25 ERA during the same span against top tier competition, the pitcher will draw interest from across the nation. At this current point in time, there is no front runner in the equation, however.
Once the situation is finalized, Head Coach Patty Gasso will have two pitchers with starting experience at her disposal on the roster. Both G Juarez and Shannon Saile possess a single year of eligibility. Presenting herself as a third option, outfielder Nicole Mendes has been known to step into the circle when needed.
Knowing all three options will enter a final year on the collegiate circuit, Gasso must put a priority on restocking the talent pool at the position. Until then, Lopez will be noticably absent!
