The Oklahoma Sooners softball team continued their dominance in the Big 12 conference, securing a convincing 7-3 victory over No. 24 Kansas in Lawrence on Saturday. This win marked their fourth consecutive conference sweep and solidified their lead at the top of the Big 12 standings.
The Sooners’ offense was on fire throughout the game, with the top four batters in the lineup leading the charge. Seniors Jayda Coleman, Tiare Jennings, Alyssa Brito, and Kinzie Hansen combined for a whopping 10 hits in 16 at-bats, launching three home runs and driving in all seven runs for Oklahoma.
Coleman’s performance was particularly impressive. Reaching base in all five plate appearances, she finished the game 2-for-2 with a home run, an RBI, and three walks. This capped off an incredible series for her, batting a staggering .857 and reaching base in 13 of her 14 plate appearances. She was spectacular in the field as well.
Jennings and Brito also had big days at the plate, each going 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBIs, and a home run. Hansen chipped in with a solid 2-for-4 performance, contributing to the offensive onslaught.
Oklahoma wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, with Jennings launching a two-run homer in the first inning. Back-to-back home runs by Brito and Coleman further extended their lead, leaving Kansas reeling early on.
Starting pitcher Kierston Deal got the nod for the Sooners and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings. Graduate pitcher Karlie Keeney took over in relief and secured the win, allowing no runs in her 2.2 innings of work.
The Sooners added three more runs in the fourth inning to solidify their lead, before the Jayhawks managed to plate a few runs late in the game. However, Oklahoma’s bullpen shut the door in the seventh, securing the decisive victory.
This dominant performance over Kansas continues the Sooners’ impressive run. They outscored the Jayhawks a staggering 30-4 in the series and outhit them 35-8. With their lead in the Big 12 conference expanding, Oklahoma now sets their sights on a crucial upcoming series against No. 2 Texas next weekend in Austin.
