Oklahoma Enacts Revenge, Claims Big 12 Championship with Dominant Pitching and Timely Hitting

The Oklahoma Sooners capped off their Big 12 era in style, defeating their archrivals, the Texas Longhorns, 5-1 to win their ninth conference tournament title. This victory served as sweet revenge after Texas stole the regular season series from the Sooners in April.

Maxwell Shines on the Big Stage

Graduate pitcher Kelly Maxwell delivered a masterful performance, silencing the nation’s top-ranked offense. She tossed 5.1 innings, allowing only one run on two hits and three walks while striking out seven.

“Kelly’s gonna be there,” said Head Coach Patty Gasso before the game, expressing her confidence in Maxwell. “She’s there, but she’s going to be at another level. I feel really confident about that.”

Maxwell’s poise and diverse arsenal of pitches kept the Longhorns off balance all night. Her efforts earned high praise from both sides.

“So good,” Gasso said after the win. “Against a team that hits the way Texas does, that was an elite performance.”

“She’s got a lot of different stuff,” admitted Texas Head Coach Mike White. “Every time you face her, she’s throwing something a little bit different. She’s tough without a doubt.”

Seniors Lead the Charge Offensively

The Sooners’ offense, spearheaded by its senior class, jumped on Texas early. Tiare Jennings’ RBI double and a fielder’s choice by Kinzie Hansen that plated Ella Parker gave OU a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. This aggressive start mirrored their approach throughout the tournament, where they consistently scored in the first frame.

“I think we like being visitors just for that reason,” Gasso said, hinting at the advantage of getting on the board first. “The team was fired up today. They had a good plan together with coaches, and they knew what we needed to do.”

While Texas starting pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez settled in after the first, the Sooners managed to tack on three more runs thanks to RBIs from Alyssa Brito, Hansen (her second), and Rylie Boone. Notably, all five runs driven in by Oklahoma came courtesy of its senior class.

Freshmen Step Up: Parker Named MVP

While the seniors provided crucial leadership and experience, freshman designated player Ella Parker emerged as a breakout star. Batting an impressive .700 across the tournament with three extra-base hits, five RBIs, and six runs scored, Parker was named the Most Outstanding Player.

“I was coming in just playing the game I know,” Parker said modestly. “Playing my way of softball is what really drove me this weekend and what I was focusing on.”

May Secures the Win

After Maxwell loaded the bases in the sixth inning, Coach Gasso turned to senior Nicole May, who shut the door on the Longhorn threat with a strikeout and a groundout. May then proceeded to retire the side in the seventh, sealing the victory for Oklahoma.

“Nicole has been the steady from the very beginning,” Gasso said, commending May’s dedication to the program. “She’s the one that’s loyal and strong with this program, and I always wish everything great for her.”

Looking Ahead

This dominant performance sends the Sooners into the NCAA Tournament on a high note. They will learn their regional guests on Selection Sunday and aim to continue their championship run. With a strong pitching staff and timely hitting, Oklahoma appears poised to make another deep run in the postseason.
