Sooner Schockwave: Trio Enters Transfer Portal Despite Championship Win
The confetti has barely settled on Oklahoma’s fourth straight national championship softball title, but the Sooners are already facing a period of transition. On June 10th, news broke that three players had entered the transfer portal, casting a bit of a shadow over the team’s historic victory.
The biggest surprise is the departure of sophomore infielder Avery Hodge. Hodge stepped up when needed most, playing a key role during the Women’s College World Series after teammate Alynah Torres was injured. Hodge, a career .278 hitter, provided a spark offensively, particularly against Florida in an elimination game. With Torres graduating, Hodge was expected to be a major contributor next season.
Redshirt sophomore utility player Quincee Lilio, ranked a top-five prospect in her recruiting class by Extra Innings Softball, has also chosen to explore her options. Lilio saw limited playing time in 2024, finishing with a .129 batting average.
The Sooners also lose redshirt freshman pitcher SJ Geurin, who boasted a stellar 0.70 earned run average in her limited appearances this season.
While roster turnover is inevitable in college athletics, the timing of these departures is a bit unexpected. Head Coach Patty Gasso, however, remains focused on the future. Gasso, known for her recruiting prowess, will undoubtedly be active in the transfer portal herself, looking to add pieces to compliment a strong incoming freshman class.
“Just be patient, we’re losing 10 seniors,” Gasso said on Saturday. “We’re going to rebuild this into something wonderful.”
With eight talented freshmen on the horizon, Gasso has a strong foundation to build upon. The Sooners faithful can rest assured that their coach, who thrives on challenges, will be relentless in her pursuit of a record-breaking ninth national championship.
