Three Reasons to Believe in Oklahoma’s Defense for the 2024 Season

The Sooners are entering a new era in the SEC, and while the offense gets a lot of attention, the defense is poised to be a strength in 2024. Here are three reasons to be confident in Oklahoma’s defense:

1. Experienced Tackling Machine Returns: The Sooners boast a core of experienced tacklers, led by returning All-Big 12 linebacker Danny Stutsman. Stutsman led the team with a whopping 104 tackles in 2023, providing a strong presence and setting the tone for the defense. He’ll be joined by 10 other top tacklers, creating a unit with a nose for the ball and a proven track record of getting stops.

2. Ball-Hawking Secondary with Veteran Leadership: The secondary received a major boost with the return of safety Billy Bowman Jr. Bowman, another All-Big 12 selection, tied for third in the nation with six interceptions last season. His leadership and experience will be crucial for a young secondary that also features the steady Woodi Washington at corner. Adding transfer Dez Malone from San Diego State provides further depth and competition. While consistency remains a question mark, the talent and leadership are there for the Sooners secondary to be a force.

3. Bolstered Defensive Line: The defensive front got a significant upgrade with the addition of transfer Damonic Williams. He clogged the middle for TCU for two seasons and will bring much-needed size and disruption to the Sooners’ defensive line. This addition, along with the returning talent, should create a more formidable wall against opposing offenses.

With a veteran core, a ball-hawking secondary, and a bolstered defensive line, Oklahoma’s defense has the potential to be a major factor in their success in the challenging SEC conference.
