The 2024 USC Trojans are a team brimming with potential, but also facing significant challenges. Head Coach Lincoln Riley, the offensive mastermind, has another talented roster but must navigate a new conference and replace the dazzling play of departed quarterback Caleb Williams.
Offense: Can Miller Moss Lead the Charge?
While Riley’s offensive schemes are legendary, questions surround the quarterback position. Redshirt junior Miller Moss impressed in the Holiday Bowl, but a full season in the Big Ten, known for its stout defenses, will be a different story. Moss has competition from Jayden Maiava, a talented transfer with dual-threat ability.
The backfield receives a boost with the arrival of Mississippi State transfer Woody Marks, a proven all-around back. However, the offensive line faces a major test against the physical Big Ten.
Defense: A Complete Overhaul Underway
The Trojans’ defense, a perennial weakness, is undergoing a dramatic transformation. New coordinator D’Anton Lynn, who led a remarkable turnaround at UCLA, spearheads the effort. Veteran coaches Matt Entz (linebackers), Eric Henderson (defensive line), and Doug Belk (secondary) round out the new staff.
While there are established talents like tackle Bear Alexander, linebacker Eric Gentry, and defensive back Akili Arnold, overall depth remains a concern. Significant improvement might take time, with progress possibly only becoming evident later in the season.
Special Teams: A Weapon in Zachariah Branch
USC boasts a strong veteran kicker and punter, but the real weapon on special teams is sophomore Zachariah Branch. This electrifying All-American can score from anywhere on the field, as evidenced by his punt and kickoff return touchdowns last season.
A Season of Transition and Opportunity
The 2024 Trojans have the talent and coaching to compete for a spot in the expanded College Football Playoff. However, navigating a new conference, replacing a star quarterback, and solidifying the defense present significant challenges. The success of this season will hinge on the development of Moss or Maiava, the effectiveness of the revamped defense, and the continued brilliance of Zachariah Branch. It will be a year of transition, but also one filled with exciting possibilities for the USC faithful.
