Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold made a strong impression in his first career home start for the Sooners, leading the team to a dominant 51-3 victory over Temple on Friday night. Completing 17 of 25 passes for 141 yards and four touchdowns, he showcased his accuracy and decision-making abilities. He also added 34 yards on the ground, demonstrating his dual-threat capabilities.

The performance marked a significant milestone for Arnold, as he joined a select group of Oklahoma quarterbacks who have thrown four or more touchdown passes in their first career home start. Only Spencer Rattler and Josh Heupel, both of whom had highly anticipated debuts in the crimson and cream, have accomplished this feat.

Heupel, in particular, is highly regarded as “Sooner Royalty” for his role in leading Oklahoma to a national championship in 2000. Arnold’s performance against Temple suggests that he has the potential to follow in the footsteps of becoming a legendary quarterback.

Arnold’s success will be crucial to Oklahoma’s offensive fortunes in 2024. Last season, he appeared in seven games as a backup, completing 44 of 69 passes (63.8%) for 563 yards and four touchdowns. His performance as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback in the Alamo Bowl, against Arizona, where he completed 26 of 45 passes for 361 yards and two touchdowns, showcased his ability to lead the offense under pressure.

As the starting quarterback, Arnold has the pressure of leading the offense squarely on his shoulders. His ability to make accurate throws, read defenses, take care of the ball, and extend plays with his legs will be key to Oklahoma’s success this season. He showcased all of that on Friday night.
