Oklahoma defensive end R. Mason Thomas turned in a performance for the ages in the fourth quarter against Tulane, single-handedly shutting down the Green Wave’s offense. His dominant display showcased his exceptional athleticism, power, and instincts.

Thomas registered a staggering three sacks in the final frame, totaling 17 yards in lost yardage for Tulane. He also forced a fumble, recovered it, and recorded a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry.

On Tulane’s second-to-last possession, Thomas recorded two sacks and a pass breakup, effectively shutting down the Green Wave’s drive. On their final possession, he forced a fumble on a sack and recovered the ball, sealing the victory for the Sooners.

Thomas’ performance set several career highs. He recorded 3.0 sacks and 3.0 tackles for loss, tied his career high with three tackles, and notched his first career forced fumble, fumble recovery, and pass breakup.

His dominance was unprecedented. He became the first Sooner with three sacks in a game since Nik Bonitto in 2020. Additionally, his six “big plays” (3.0 sacks/TFLs, forced fumble, fumble recovery, PBU, and QBH) were the most by an OU defensive player since Jalen Redmond in 2021.

Thomas joined an elite group of Oklahoma defensive players who have recorded six or more big plays in a single game. The other two were Jimmy Wilkerson and Cedric Jones, both of whom had standout performances.
