Tennessee secured a 25-15 victory over Oklahoma in their Southeastern Conference opener, marking a triumphant return for head coach Josh Heupel to his alma mater.
Heupel, who quarterbacked Oklahoma to a national championship in 2000, orchestrated a solid performance from the Volunteers’ offense. Nico Iamaleava led the way with 194 passing yards and a touchdown pass. Dylan Sampson added 92 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Dont’e Thornton Jr. had a 66-yard touchdown reception.
The Volunteers’ defense held Oklahoma to just 222 total yards, showcasing their dominance against the Sooners’ offense. Jovantae Barnes contributed a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown for Oklahoma, but the Sooners struggled to generate consistent offense.
Oklahoma’s Jackson Arnold struggled throughout the game, completing just 7 of 16 passes for 54 yards and an interception and two fumbles before being benched in the second quarter. Michael Hawkins Jr. took over at quarterback and led the Sooners on two late scoring drive, but they ultimately fell short.
A notable injury occurred in the second quarter when Oklahoma defensive back Kendel Dolby was carted off the field after a gruesome injury to his lower right leg.
Despite recovering two fumbles forced on Iamaleava, Oklahoma’s offense struggled to capitalize on their turnovers. On both occasions Arnold fumbled on the ensuing play, negated any momentum gained from the recoveries by the defense.
No Quarterback Controversy: It’s Hawkins Over Arnold
The Oklahoma Sooners face a crucial decision at the quarterback position following their loss to Tennessee. While both Jackson Arnold and Michael Hawkins saw playing time, it was Hawkins who showcased a more effective performance.
Hawkins’ performance against Tennessee was a stark contrast to Arnold’s struggles. Arnold’s interception, fumble inside the Tennessee 5-yard line, and backward pass were costly mistakes that hindered the Sooners’ offense. One thing that Arnold has proven more than anything else is that he’s prone to turn the ball over. Think back to last week’s pick-6 against Tulane, or even worse, the Alamo Bowl performance.
While the offensive line has also contributed to the team’s struggles, it’s clear that Hawkins’ performance was superior. Switching back to Arnold could potentially create division within the locker room and further frustrate the fan base.
Salt In The Wounds

- Kendel Dolby: Suffered an ankle fracture and will require surgery.

Another Bright Spot
Michael Hawkins Jr. wasn’t the only ray of hope within the Sooner offense on Saturday night. Sophomore receiver Jaquaize Pettaway caught three passes for a team high 79 yards.
The Defense Was More Than Enough
Tennessee rolled into Norman averaging 63 points per game. Oklahoma’s defense held them to just 25 points. They produced three quarterback sacks, and giftwrapped the offense two scoring opportunities that they subsequently wasted. If you were looking for a reason to believe in the Sooner defense, this performance should have been more than enough.
