Sooners’ Hot Start to 2025 Season

Oklahoma enters the Getterman Classic with an unblemished record after a strong start to the season in California. The Sooners wrapped up their road trip with a dramatic 2-0 victory over Long Beach State in an 11-inning thriller, sealed by a clutch RBI double from junior outfielder Abigale Dayton. The defensive battle showcased OU’s elite pitching staff, which has been dominant through the first six games of the season.

Scouting the Opponents

No. 24 Baylor Bears

Baylor (4-2) kicked off their season at the Aggie Classic, securing wins over Abilene Christian, Purdue, and Villanova but suffering losses to Utah State and No. 8 Texas A&M. The Bears bring a well-balanced lineup, featuring standout infielder Shaylon Govan, a preseason All-Big 12 selection and former NFCA First-Team All-American. Catcher Turiya Coleman also made the Preseason All-Big 12 team and has been a key contributor on offense. Baylor’s pitching staff has shown flashes of excellence but will need to step up against Oklahoma’s high-powered offense.

Hofstra Pride

Hofstra was lost its season opener to Baylor, 7-0, on Friday night in Waco. The Bears took control early, scoring three runs in the first inning behind clutch two-out hitting from Presleigh Pilon and Amber Toven. Freshman pitcher Sadie Ross was sharp in the circle, striking out four over five scoreless innings while keeping Hofstra’s offense in check. The Pride struggled to generate momentum, managing just three hits and failing to capitalize on early baserunners. Baylor added insurance runs in the third and sixth innings, highlighted by a two-run single from Turiya Coleman, to seal the commanding victory. Reliever Lexie Warncke closed out the game with a dominant seventh inning, securing Baylor’s first win of the tournament and setting the stage for their upcoming matchups against No. 3 Oklahoma.

The Pride finished last season with a 23-26 record, going 17-10 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Despite their struggles, Hofstra has some key returners, including catcher Olivia Malinowski and utility player Gabby Sultan, both of whom were named to the CAA Preseason All-Conference Team. Hofstra will be looking to make a statement against the Sooners.

What to Expect in Waco

The Getterman Classic will provide an excellent test for Oklahoma as they continue to fine-tune their lineup and pitching rotation. Baylor presents a solid challenge, particularly with its experienced hitters and the return of Govan to the lineup. Meanwhile, Hofstra will be eager to prove itself against one of the top programs in the country.

For the Sooners, the weekend will be another opportunity to showcase their depth. With a rotation featuring multiple elite arms and an offense that has already demonstrated its firepower, OU will look to maintain its dominance. Expect big performances from players like Dayton, Parker, and Smith, as well as continued contributions from a strong freshman class.
