The 2025 SEC Softball Tournament opened with a trio of compelling matchups Tuesday at Jack Turner Stadium, as Georgia, Ole Miss, and Alabama each punched their ticket to the second round in distinctly different fashions. From a run-rule rout to a nail-biting finish, Day 1 showcased the depth and drama of SEC softball.
Bulldogs Make Statement in Home Opener
No. 12 seed Georgia wasted no time electrifying the home crowd, blanking No. 13 seed Kentucky in an 8-0 five-inning affair to kick off the tournament. Fueled by a dominant pitching performance from senior Lilli Backes and timely hitting from Jaydyn Goodwin and Dallis Goodnight, the Bulldogs made it two straight years with an opening-round win.
Backes spun a three-hit shutout, striking out six Wildcats and walking just two. The win improved her record to 14-9 and set the tone for a Georgia team looking to ride the energy of its home field deep into the tournament.
“I’m really proud of the way we played and got after it,” said Georgia head coach Tony Baldwin. “We were pretty free in our competitiveness and didn’t make it a bigger deal than it is.”
Goodwin led the offensive charge with a 2-for-3 day and four RBIs, tying Georgia’s all-time SEC Tournament record. Goodnight added two hits and an RBI, providing a spark at the top of the lineup.
A three-run first inning quickly put Kentucky on its heels, and Georgia delivered the knockout punch with a five-run fourth that included several timely hits and aggressive baserunning. The Bulldogs advance to face fifth-seeded Arkansas on Wednesday.
Ole Miss Edges Missouri in Pitching Duel
If Georgia’s win was about offense, Ole Miss’s 1-0 victory over No. 14 seed Missouri was all about pitching. Junior left-hander Brianna Lopez tossed a gem, going the distance while allowing just three hits and striking out seven Tigers.
The Rebels scratched out the game’s only run in the first inning. Jaden Pone led off with a single and later scored on a sharply-hit double to left-center by Persy Llamas, who finished 2-for-3 with the lone RBI.
Lopez was in command throughout, breezing through the fifth and sixth innings before navigating some late pressure in the seventh. Missouri threatened with two runners on and two outs, but Lopez sealed the win with her seventh strikeout.
The performance continued a trend for Ole Miss, which has now won four consecutive SEC Tournament openers under head coach Jamie Trachsel.
“We stayed composed and trusted our defense,” said Lopez. “Everything came together today.”
The Rebels move on to face sixth-seeded Florida in a marquee second-round matchup set for 4 p.m. CT Wednesday on SEC Network.
Alabama Survives Rivalry Test
The day’s final game offered the most drama, as No. 11 seed Alabama edged 10th-seeded Auburn 3-2 in a tense rivalry showdown.
Trailing 1-0 after a solo home run by Auburn’s Nelia Peralta in the first inning, Alabama answered quickly. Salen Hawkins doubled in a run in the second, then added a sac fly RBI in the third following an RBI triple by Kali Heivilin.
“You can see why [Auburn pitcher SJ Geurin] won 20 games this season,” said Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy. “But we stayed behind the ball, found some gaps, and Jocelyn [Briski] and the defense did the rest.”
Briski delivered a complete-game effort in the circle, matching her career high with eight strikeouts. The sophomore right-hander improved to 16-11 on the season and notched her third complete-game win against SEC opposition.
Auburn made it interesting late, scoring in the sixth and putting the tying run on base in the seventh, but Briski shut the door with a called third strike to end the threat and preserve the win.
Alabama’s 47th all-time SEC Tournament victory tied LSU for the most in conference history. The Tide now turns its focus to seventh-seeded South Carolina, who awaits in Wednesday’s second round.
Day 1 Takeaways
As expected, the opening day of the SEC Tournament highlighted the league’s parity. Georgia proved it is more than just a host, showing firepower and command in all facets of the game. Ole Miss reminded everyone that elite pitching still wins championships, while Alabama showed veteran grit and postseason poise against a tough Auburn squad.
Jaydyn Goodwin’s four-RBI effort stood out as the day’s top offensive performance, while Lopez’s seven-strikeout shutout was arguably the most clutch individual outing in the circle.
Each winner faces a stiffer challenge in Round 2, but the momentum gained on Tuesday could prove decisive.
