The second day of the 2024 SEC Softball Tournament brought high drama, clutch performances, and record-breaking moments as four teams — LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and South Carolina — punched their tickets to the quarterfinals in emphatic fashion. From a freshman’s shutout masterpiece to a historic walk-off grand slam, extra-inning power, and a record-setting two-homer night, the action at Jack Turner Stadium on Wednesday provided everything fans could hope for from postseason softball in the nation’s toughest conference.

Heavener’s Heroics Launch LSU into Quarterfinals

Kicking off the day’s action, No. 10/9 LSU made a resounding statement with a dominant 5-0 victory over No. 17/18 Mississippi State. Freshman phenom Jayden Heavener was nearly untouchable in the circle, tossing her fifth shutout of the season — a complete-game one-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks on 104 pitches.

With the performance, Heavener tied for eighth all-time in LSU history for shutouts by a freshman in a single season, matching Allie Walljasper’s 2015 mark. She retired 21 of the 23 batters she faced, with the only baserunners coming via a hit-by-pitch and a single in the middle innings. Otherwise, the LSU defense was airtight behind her.

Heavener’s dominant outing allowed the Tigers to settle in offensively, and the bottom half of the lineup delivered early and often. LSU’s hitters 6-9 combined to go 4-for-7 with three runs scored and two RBI in the first four innings, establishing a lead that would never be threatened.

Outfielder Jalia Lassiter finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Sierra Daniel and Tori Edwards each added two hits and a run scored. Avery Hodge also contributed a pair of RBI, including a fourth-inning double that pushed the Tigers’ lead to 5-0.

Mississippi State’s Raelin Chaffin was charged with the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings. The Bulldogs managed just one hit and never seriously threatened as LSU closed out the game by retiring the final seven batters.

The Tigers (41-13) will now prepare for a highly anticipated quarterfinal showdown against top-seeded Oklahoma on Thursday morning. LSU will look to flip the script against a Sooners team that has won the last two matchups in the series, including a 3-0 victory in 2023.

Bri Ellis Makes History with Walk-Off Grand Slam

In the afternoon contest, it was Arkansas senior Bri Ellis who delivered the day’s most unforgettable moment — and then some. With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh and the bases loaded, Ellis crushed a 1-0 pitch 258 feet over the left field wall for a walk-off grand slam, powering the Razorbacks to a 5-1 win over Georgia.

The blast was historic on multiple levels. It was Ellis’ 26th home run of the season, setting a new Arkansas single-season record and tying the SEC’s all-time single-season mark, previously shared by Mia Davidson and Bailey Hemphill. The four RBIs pushed her season total to 72, also a new program high, breaking the previous record of 70 set by Danielle Gibson Whorton in 2022.

“It’s just about doing what the team needs,” Ellis said after the game. “I’ve walked a lot lately, and that’s fine. But when I finally saw a pitch to hit, I knew I had to take advantage.”

Ellis had walked in six straight plate appearances before her game-winning swing and extended her on-base streak to 26 games, the fifth longest in program history.

Courtney Day helped spark the Arkansas offense earlier with a solo home run in the fifth inning, her 16th of the season, which tied the game at 1-1 after Georgia had taken the lead on a Marissa Miller RBI single in the fourth.

Pitching was also a key for Arkansas. Starter Payton Burnham allowed just one run over four innings before handing the ball to Robyn Herron, who threw three perfect innings in relief, retiring nine of ten batters faced with three strikeouts. The Razorbacks’ defense was sharp throughout, highlighted by Ellis turning a double play in the first inning and Atalyia Rijo’s diving stop in the seventh.

With the victory, Arkansas (39-11) secured its first SEC Tournament win since 2022 and will face Tennessee in the quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon.

Ole Miss Stuns Florida with Extra-Inning Power Surge

The nightcap provided the final dramatic flourish of the day as No. 18 Ole Miss upset No. 4 Florida in a wild 6-3, eight-inning affair that saw the Rebels use a pair of three-run home runs — one early, one late — to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2017.

Freshman Mackenzie Pickens played the hero in extras, launching a go-ahead three-run shot in the top of the eighth to break a 3-3 deadlock. Pickens’ blast came after fellow freshman Persy Llamas provided a nearly identical jolt in the third inning with a three-run homer of her own to give Ole Miss an early lead.

Florida responded quickly to Llamas’ home run, scoring a run in the bottom of the third to trim the lead to 3-1 and then tying the game in the fifth. But clutch pitching and timely defense kept the game knotted until Pickens delivered the decisive blow.

Ole Miss pitcher Gabby Lopez worked her way through a bases-loaded jam in the third and held the powerful Florida lineup in check for most of the evening. The Rebels’ defense came through in the clutch, particularly in the middle innings as Florida mounted several threats but couldn’t capitalize.

With the win, the Rebels (37-16) have now defeated Florida twice in a row for only the third time in program history and will meet Texas in Thursday’s quarterfinal.

Rodi’s Record Night Propels South Carolina Past Alabama

In a powerful late-night performance, No. 14/12 South Carolina punched its ticket to the quarterfinals with a 6-2 win over No. 20/16 Alabama, thanks to a historic night at the plate from Arianna Rodi.

Rodi went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and crushed a pair of home runs — her first multi-homer game of the season — becoming the first Gamecock to hit two home runs in an SEC Tournament game. Her second blast, a sixth-inning shot to left center, was her 16th of the year, setting a new single-season program record.

Alabama opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first, but South Carolina answered immediately. Karley Shelton scored on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the first, and Ella Chancey tied the game in the third with a double that plated Lexi Winters.

The turning point came in the fifth when Rodi broke the tie with a 235-foot home run following a leadoff single from Shelton. Chancey later added her second double of the game — the 200th hit of her career — before Rodi struck again in the sixth with another two-run blast. Winters followed with her 100th career hit, capping off the offensive surge.

In the circle, Sam Gress and Jori Heard combined to silence Alabama after the first inning. Gress scattered four hits over four innings before giving way to Heard, who earned the win in relief with three innings of one-hit ball and four strikeouts. The Gamecocks retired 16 of the final 18 batters they faced.

With the victory, South Carolina (40-14) advances to face No. 2 seed Texas A&M on Thursday night at approximately 8 p.m.

Looking Ahead: Quarterfinals Promise More Fireworks

With LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss, and South Carolina advancing, Thursday’s quarterfinal matchups are now set and promise even more drama. LSU will face a juggernaut in top-seeded Oklahoma, Arkansas takes on a powerful Tennessee squad, Ole Miss looks to continue its Cinderella run against Texas, and South Carolina aims to keep the bats hot against Texas A&M.

If Wednesday’s slate was any indication, fans at Jack Turner Stadium — and watching across the country — are in for another electrifying day as the road to the SEC Tournament championship continues.
