Preseason polls are an interesting exercise.
They’re supposed to predict what’s going to happen.
Too often, they simply reward what already happened.
That’s why I think the SEC media may have missed the mark when it slotted Oklahoma seventh in its preseason poll.
Now, before Sooners fans accuse me of crying disrespect, let’s acknowledge something important.
Ranking Oklahoma seventh isn’t an insult.
The Sooners are still viewed as one of the conference’s better teams, earning 1,914 points and even receiving two first-place votes to win the SEC Championship. In a league as loaded as the SEC, that’s hardly a vote of no confidence.
In fact, only 90 points separate third-place Ole Miss from seventh-place Oklahoma. That tells us the media sees those five teams as essentially interchangeable.
But here’s where I think the voters got it wrong.
