Oklahoma State 38 – Texas 35 Notes & Quotes | Coaches Explain Altercation

Oklahoma State’s upset of #6 Texas was overshadowed a bit on Saturday night by a heated exchange between the two head coaches. Let’s set the scene here in case you missed it. With the game in hand, the Cowboys took a knee from victory formation but Texas linebacker Breckyn Hager came crashing in and was ultimately thrown to the ground by OSU receiver Tyron Johnson. That’s when things got a little crazy!

After the game Mike Gundy said that the reason he came out on the field was to try and prevent a brawl. “I was trying to get my guys back, and he (Herman) thought I was trying to get in it, Gundy said.”

Tom Herman, who ended up looking very much the part of a poor sport, seemed to take Gundy’s reasoning at face value and that the two coaches were just fine now.

“I thought Mike had come out and was having words with one of our players,” Herman said. “I took exception to that. When I shook his hand at the end he said ‘Hey I was just trying to make sure we were smart and no fight ensued.’ I believe him, we smiled. We go way back, and I have no issues. He told me what he was trying to do. I saw it differently at first, and I was going to go defend my player.”

Player Quotes

“I was just going and I saw him look for the ball and was thinking “oh man, he see’s this.” I knew I just needed to do what we work on in practice. I made sure I timed my jump right, and he mistimed it, and I guess I got the timing right and came down with it.” – Receiver Tylan Wallace on his fourth down touchdown catch

“You have to give credit to the offensive line, because that’s where it all starts. They played a hell of a game today. Unbelievable job tonight. Tylan (Wallace) had some unbelievable catches, the line did a great job blocking, Justice and all those running backs did a great job as well.” – Quarterback Taylor Cornelius on the success of the offense

“Everybody fed off each other’s energy. Somebody would make a play and that picked up another guy. Everyone was just having a lot of fun out there.” – Linebacker Justin Phillips on the key for the defense
