Jalen Hurts is certainly making an impact on the Oklahoma football program but he’s also become a polarizing character across the Big 12 landscape as well. In Saturday’s 52-14 win over West Virginia Hurts completed 16-of-17 passes for 316 yards and three scores. He also ran ten times for a team-high 75 yards and two more scores in a performance that draws him closer to setting another conference milestone.
According to ESPN Stats, Hurts has now produced five consecutive games with multiple passing touchdowns and a rushing score. It is the second longest streak by a Big 12 quarterback in the last 15 years.
Hurts also completed his fifth game this season with a QB efficiency rating of 240-plus. Baker Mayfield had four such games and Kyler Murray had three.
Quick Game Thoughts
- Jalen Hurts’ 75 rushing yards were more than the Mountaineers had as a team. His 391 total offensive yards were more than West Virginia had as a team. Hurts absolutely the most valuable player on Oklahoma’s offense.
- The pecking order for the running backs seems to have been set. Kennedy Brooks is Oklahoma’s lead back with Trey Sermon and Rhamondre Stevenson in support roles. Riley also used Sermon and Stevenson in a sort of “Jumbo Package” on short-yardage situations.
- Alex Grinch has more respect for West Virginia receivers than he did for Texas. The Sooners dialed back the quarterback pressure today to maintain downfield coverage. The scheme didn’t result in Oklahoma recording a sack but Austin Kendall completed less than 50% of his passes (15/31)
