Oklahoma dropped Friday’s series opener with San Diego State but came back to take the series by winning Saturday’s game and then walking off the Aztecs, in extra innings, on Sunday.
Friday | SDSU 5 – OU 4
A 4-run second inning helped SDSU upset 11th ranked Oklahoma on Friday night. Cade Cavalli struck out nine batters through seven innings of work but was wrung up for five runs, dropping his season record to 1-2.
Three Oklahoma home runs weren’t quite enough in the 5-4 loss. Brady Lindsly’s two run shot to left-center field in the bottom of the ninth had fans believing in a rally but it just wasn’t meant to be.
Saturday | OU 8 – SDSU 4
It was the Aztecs attempting a ninth inning rally on Saturday but the Sooners were able to withstand a 3-run ninth to hang on and even the series.
The Sooners scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to push a 2-1 game to a comfortable 7-1 lead. Another run in the eighth made it an 8-1 score before San Diego State tried to rally in the top of the ninth.
Levi Prater picked up his first win of the season (1-0) by going seven strong innings from the mound. He thirteen Aztec batters and allowed just one run on five hits.
Peyton Graham hit two home runs in his first two at bats of the game and Justin Mitchell went yard in the sixth inning to boost Oklahoma’s production from the plate.
Sunday | OU 9 – SDSU 8
With the series knotted at one game each we were pretty much owed a slugfest of a rubber match. That’s exactly what we got on Sunday afternoon.
The Sooners plated seven runs through the first four innings to build what felt like a comfortable 7-1 lead but SDSU put up two in the fifth and one more in the sixth to tighten things up.
Three more runs in the top of the eighth gave the Aztecs an 8-7 lead and put Oklahoma in jeopardy of dropping their first series of the season. A pair of throwing errors from SDSU’s second baseman, Mike Jarvis, saved the day and the series though.
Tyler Hardman evened the score in the bottom of the eighth on an errant throw from Jarvis. Then Saturday’s hero, Peyton Graham, led off the bottom of the tenth with a single to third base.
After Graham stole second, Jarvis fielded a hit from Brady Harlan was off again on the throw to first. The errant toss allowed Graham to score from second, ending the game in quite a dramatic walk-off fashion.
Jason Ruffcorn pitched the final two innings, holding San Diego State without a hit, and striking out four, to pick up his first win of the sason (1-0).
