Oklahoma suffered a blow to their 2025 recruiting class on Wednesday night when highly-touted wide receiver Jaden Nickens announced his decommitment from the Sooners.
Nickens, a standout athlete from Oklahoma City, initially pledged his allegiance to Oklahoma in August 2023. He was considered a major get for the Sooners, ranked as the No. 106 overall player and No. 9 wide receiver in the 2025 class according to 247Sports. His commitment joined fellow four-star wideouts Elijah Thomas and Gracen Harris, giving Oklahoma one of the top recruiting classes in the nation.
The news came as a surprise to many, as Nickens had previously reaffirmed his commitment to Oklahoma following the departure of offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby. However, in a social media post, Nickens explained that his decision was “all about me and my dreams.” He expressed gratitude to the University of Oklahoma and the Sooners fanbase but stated his desire to “experience the process more deeply” and “explore with open options.” Notably, Nickens also revealed his intention to pursue playing both basketball and football at the collegiate level.
This decommitment is a significant setback for Oklahoma’s 2025 recruiting class. Nickens’ athleticism and playmaking ability were seen as a major asset for the Sooners’ offense. Coach Brent Venables and his staff will now look to identify other talented wide receivers to fill the void left by Nickens. While Oklahoma remains in the mix for several top-rated receivers, replacing a local product of Nickens’ caliber will be a challenge.
