The Oklahoma Sooners’ bats fell silent on Saturday night, as they were upset by the Connecticut Huskies 4-1 in the Norman Regional Semifinals. This came as a surprise to many, considering OU’s offensive dominance just a day earlier when they drubbed Oral Roberts 14-0.
Missed Opportunities Plague Oklahoma
Despite getting multiple baserunners throughout the game, the Sooners struggled to capitalize with runners in scoring position. In several key innings, OU had a chance to tie the game but couldn’t string together hits.
- In the 4th inning, Michael Snyder doubled but Jackson Nicklaus and Scott Mudler struck out.
- In the 5th inning, John Spikerman doubled but Bryce Madron grounded out.
- In the 7th inning, after a single by Mudler, Rocco Garza-Gongora grounded into a double play.
- In the 9th inning, with runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs, OU couldn’t get a hit as the Huskies escaped the jam.
Coach Skip Johnson Acknowledges Missed Chances
Head Coach Skip Johnson recognized the missed opportunities, stating, “We hit a lot of balls hard in that game right at guys…That’s baseball, hats off to them, and maybe this is just part of the story.”
UConn’s Stephen Quigley Shuts Down Sooners
Connecticut starting pitcher Stephen Quigley was a major factor in stifling the Sooners’ offense. Despite only striking out two batters, he limited OU to just one run and scattered seven hits over his outing.
“He threw the backdoor slider and rammed the fastballs in, made some really quality pitches,” Johnson said of Quigley. “We hit some balls hard, I want to say 14 balls that we had quality at-bats on and hit balls, line drive outs. He did a great job and they played great defense.”
Sooners Face Elimination Game on Sunday
With the loss, Oklahoma is now in a fight for survival. They will face Duke in an elimination game on Sunday afternoon. If they win, they’ll get another shot at UConn in the evening for a chance to advance to the next round.
