2024 Oklahoma Football Countdown To Kickoff | `87 Red River Rivalry Turns into Sooner Stampede

The 1987 Red River Rivalry was a tale of two teams trending in opposite directions. The Texas Longhorns, under new coach David McWilliams, were trying to find their footing after a dismal 5-6 season the year before. Meanwhile, the Oklahoma Sooners, led by coach Barry Switzer, were in the hunt for a second national championship, in three years, and heavily favored to win their third straight conference title.

Unprecedented Point Spread

The Sooners, boasting an explosive offense averaging 54 points per game, entered the game as a staggering 30-point favorite – the largest spread in the 82-year history of the rivalry.

Texas Shows Early Fight

Despite the underdog status, Texas hung tough early. A field goal by Wayne Clements gave them a surprise lead late in the first quarter. However, the Sooners responded with a touchdown drive capped by a Lydell Carr run in the second quarter. R.D. Lashar added field goals to extend Oklahoma’s lead to 13-3. A late Texas field goal would make it 13-6 going into the half.

Second Half Rout

The second half belonged entirely to the Sooners. Interceptions by Rickey Dixon and Troy Johnson fueled Oklahoma’s offense, leading to touchdowns by Carl Cabbiness and Patrick Collins. The Sooners’ defense continued to dominate, with Derrick Crudup adding another interception and Charles Thompson contributing a rushing touchdown.

Final Score: Oklahoma 44, Texas 9

The Sooners’ dominant rushing attack, totaling 392 yards and five interceptions on defense, sealed the victory. Freshman quarterback Charles Thompson even got some valuable playing time after Jamelle Holieway left the game with an injury.

Switzer Praises Defensive Performance

“Everybody here saw a great defensive team in the second half,” said Coach Switzer after the game. “The turnovers in the second half led to 31 points and that won the game.”

With a perfect 5-0 record, Oklahoma looked unstoppable heading into the rest of the season. The Red River Rivalry turned into a one-sided affair, showcasing the Sooners’ championship aspirations.
