Week 2 SEC Power Rankings: Georgia, LSU Hold Strong as the Middle Gets Messy

Advertisements

Week 1 gave us plenty to chew on, and our SEC power rankings reflect it. As always, the way these rankings are tallied is simple: each of us submits our 1–16 ballot, with the top spot earning 16 points, second place earning 15, and so on, all the way down to 1 point for the bottom team. The totals are then added up to give us our composite rankings. You can scroll to the bottom of the page to see how each of us — Caleb, Craig, and Matt — voted individually.

This week’s rankings bring both agreement and disagreement in true SEC fashion. We were unanimous in putting Texas at No. 3 despite their close loss at Ohio State, but we were razor-close in several other spots. Florida and Oklahoma end up tied at No. 4, while Arkansas and Vanderbilt share the No. 13 slot. We also saw near-consensus on teams like Georgia and LSU at the very top and Kentucky at the bottom, while others — Alabama, South Carolina, and even Ole Miss — created plenty of disagreement between us. In short, there’s no shortage of diversity in this week’s ballots, and that’s what makes these rankings fun to revisit week after week.

Comparing Week 2 to Week 1

The first big shake-up in the SEC Power Rankings from Week 1 comes at the very top, where Georgia leapfrogged Texas to take the No. 1 spot, and LSU also climbed ahead of the Longhorns to settle in at No. 2. Alabama, which opened the season as a top-three team, tumbled all the way down to No. 9 after a rough debut, while Florida and Oklahoma made the biggest upward moves, both surging into the top five after starting in the middle of the pack. South Carolina and Tennessee also showed modest gains, while Ole Miss, Missouri, and Auburn inched upward but remained outside the upper tier. At the bottom, Kentucky slipped even further, while Mississippi State picked up a few points but still sits near the cellar. Overall, Week 2’s rankings reveal a major reordering of the league’s power structure, with early performances forcing a reconsideration of which programs truly belong among the SEC’s elite.

Individual Rankings

Caleb

1. LSU |  The Tigers looked pretty good against the Number 4 team in the country. Garret Nussmeir looked the part and so did the LSU defense.

2. Georgia | Gunner stockton had an impressive start to the 2025 season, leading the Bulldogs in both passing and rushing yards with 4 total touchdowns. The defense also looked to be just as good as they have been in the years past.

3. Texas | Although the Longhorns lost, they still looked to be one of the top defenses in the country. Even if they still have some things to prove on the the offensive side of the ball, Texas shouldn’t be counted out.

4.South Carolina

5. Texas A&M

6. Florida

7. Tennessee

8. Oklahoma

9. Alabama

10. Ole Miss

11. Auburn

12. Missouri

13. Vanderbilt

14. Arkansas

15. Mississippi State | The Bulldogs didn’t look bad saturday against Southern Mississippi. Im still not sure how good this team can be. With Arizona State coming up we should know a lot more about this team come next week.

16. Kentucky | The Wildcats weren’t able to do a lot through the air against Toledo with just 85 yards. Although the ground game look decent I’m not bought in on this offense being able to do much this season.

Craig

1. Georgia | Standard win for the Bulldogs over Marshall. They looked nearly flawless and showed that they will once again be a huge offensive threat.

2. LSU | The Tigers had the most impressive win over the weekend with a victory over #4 Clemson. They scored 14 unanswered second half points to escape with the win. LSU was 4th in my pre-season rankings, but maybe they should have been higher.

3. Texas |  Not the start to the season that the Longhorns had hoped for. Defensively this team was very sound. On offense they were out of sorts and Arch Manning looked visibly uncomfortable at times. At the end of the day, they lost by a touchdown on the road to the defending national champs. That’s why they remain in my top three for now.

4. South Carolina

5. Oklahoma

6. Alabama

7. Texas A&M

8. Florida

9. Ole Miss

10. Tennessee

11. Missouri

12. Vanderbilt

13. Arkansas

14. Auburn

15. Kentucky | The Wildcats escaped with an 8 point win over Toledo after allowing 14 points in the fourth quarter. Kentucky struggled offensively, especially at the quarterback position. They’ll need far better QB play in order to have any type of success in the SEC this season.

16. Mississippi State | The Bulldogs led Southern Miss by only 3 points at half before coming out and scoring 21 in the third quarter. Probably not what you want to see against a team like that, but a win is a win.

Matt

1. Georgia | The Bulldogs flexed in a 45–7 win over Marshall, looking every bit like a playoff team. Gunner Stockton and that receiver room are scary. Alabama’s stumble and Texas’ loss open the door — Georgia claims the top spot.

2. LSU | Statement win. Taking down No. 4 Clemson 17–10 on a neutral field is as good as it gets in Week 1. Defense was suffocating, and the Tigers look like the biggest threat to Georgia right now.

3. Texas | Falling 14–7 at No. 3 Ohio State isn’t shameful, but Texas slides for now. They remain a playoff-caliber team, and if the offense clicks, they’ll be right back in the top two.

4. Florida

5. Oklahoma

6. Tennessee

7. Texas A&M

8. Ole Miss

9. Missouri

10. Auburn

11. Alabama

12. South Carolina

13. Arkansas

14. Mississippi State

15. Vanderbilt | A 45–3 pounding of Charleston Southern is a step forward, but the Dores still need to prove it against Power Five competition.

16. Kentucky |  Escaped Toledo 24–16. Not inspiring. For a program with expectations, struggling against a MAC team keeps them in the basement.
