Welcome to the 2025 SEC Power Rankings: The Kickoff Edition

Welcome to the debut of our 2025 SEC Football Power Rankings! As the college football season kicks off, our staff—Caleb, Craig, and Matt—has taken on the challenging task of ranking all 16 teams in the toughest conference in the nation. This isn’t just about picking favorites; it’s a fun and dynamic exercise in thought and speculation. Our rankings are determined by a consensus system where each of us assigns points to every team, with a top ranking earning a maximum of 16 points and the bottom spot receiving a single point.

The results of our first tally produced a few fascinating outcomes. For starters, while each of us had a different vision for the top-ranked team—with Caleb backing LSU, Craig putting his faith in Georgia, and Matt holding firm on Texas—only one team could claim the consensus number one spot. That honor goes to the Texas Longhorns, a testament to the fact that all three of us felt strongly about their championship potential across the board.

Our rankings are also not exempt from ties, a regular occurrence in our preseason analysis. In this first edition, we have a deadlock for the third spot, with both Alabama and LSU locked in a tie. Further down the list, Auburn and Vanderbilt find themselves knotted up at the No. 12 position.

However, we did achieve perfect consensus at the very bottom of the conference. All three of us were in full agreement on the final two teams, unanimously placing Kentucky at number 15 and Mississippi State at number 16.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Be sure to check out our individual rankings below to see how each of us arrived at our conclusions and to dive deeper into the speculation for every SEC program.

Individual Rankings

Caleb

1. LSU |  The tigers bring back a lot of talent from last year. The tigers aren’t being talked about enough with being one of the best if not the best in the SEC.

2. Texas | The Longhorns look to follow up 2 great season in a row. They lost a lot from last year but are in a position to reload and not rebuild.

3. Georgia | The bulldogs should have one of the best defenses in the SEC. If Gunner Stockton can play well the bulldogs can definitely find themselves back in the SEC championship hame.

4. Alabama

5. South Carolina

6. Texas A&M

7. Florida

8. Oklahoma

9. Tennessee

10. Ole Miss

11. Vanderbilt

12. Missouri

13. Aubrun

14. Arkansas

15. Kentucky | Mark Stoops hopes Zach Calzada can help improve the offense but the bigger question is how improved the defense can be.

16. Mississippi State | Blake Shappen is back from injury, but with not a lot around him im not sure how good this team can be. Can Lebby make something happen in year two.

Craig

1. Georgia | I know Texas might be the favorite for the top spot, but I like the Bulldogs coming off of another SEC championship in 2024. Gunnar Stockton will be back at the helm on offense with as many weapons around him as anyone in college football. This isn’t my prediction for them to win the conference, but it’s certainly their spot to lose.

2. Texas | The Longhorns seem primed for a run at the conference title after barely coming up short last season. Texas has talent on both sides of the ball, but can Arch Manning live up to the hype and survive the SEC gauntlet?

3. Alabama | Bama has the potential to bounce back this year if they can get some solid production from Ty Simpson. This Crimson Tide squad is talented enough that if they had an experienced QB they would be favored to win it all.

4. LSU

5. Oklahoma

6. South Carolina

7. Texas A&M

8. Florida

9. Ole Miss

10. Tennessee

11. Missouri

12. Vanderbilt

13. Arkansas

14. Auburn

15. Kentucky | The Wildcats are coming off of a down year in 2024 and it’s hard to be optimistic about this season with the offense at hand. Zach Calzada has had a mediocre career and will need to have a breakout season to give the Wildcats any hope.

16. Mississippi State | Jeff Lebby’s first season at Mississippi State didn’t go as planned. They did make some improvements in the off season especially at the quarterback position. Nonetheless, a bowl appearance is probably the best case scenario for this team.

Matt

1. Texas | The Longhorns have secured the top spot in my first set of power rankings, a position that feels both earned and destined. Texas has been knocking on the door of a national title, reaching the College Football Playoff semifinals in back-to-back seasons. Their consistent success has been fueled by sensational recruiting classes and a roster peppered with returning All-Americans.

2. Alabama | While the 2024 season was considered a transitional period for Alabama under new head coach Kalen DeBoer, the grace period is officially over, and the standard of winning national titles is back in full force. The Crimson Tide earns the No. 2 spot in these rankings due to a potent combination of coaching continuity and an influx of talent in key positions.

3. Georgia | The Bulldogs have secured the No. 3 spot in my rankings despite facing significant roster turnover, particularly on the offensive line where four starters have departed. The key to their success hinges on the new-look offense, led by quarterback Gunner Stockton, who is poised to take the reins. While his in-game experience is limited, he will benefit from an elite group of receivers, including talented transfers and established players.

4. LSU

5. Florida

6. Texas A&M

7. Tennessee

8. Oklahoma

9. Ole Miss

10. Auburn

11. Missouri

12. South Carolina

13. Arkansas

14. Vanderbilt

15. Kentucky | Despite high expectations from the fan base, the Kentucky Wildcats find themselves near the bottom of my power rankings due to a significant amount of uncertainty heading into the 2025 season. The team is looking to rebound from a disappointing 4-8 campaign, but the path forward is clouded by a massive roster overhaul, with 50 newcomers joining the squad.

16. Mississippi State | The Bulldogs find themselves at the bottom of my rankings as they look to overcome the struggles of a winless SEC season in 2024. While the team shows promise with the return of quarterback Blake Shapen from injury and a dynamic running back duo in Davin Booth and Fluff Bothwell, these offensive bright spots are overshadowed by significant question marks on the defensive side of the ball.
