The worst kept secret was that Lamar Jackson was a lock to win the Heisman. The question was what the order would be for those who followed him. Well now we know. Here is the breakdown for the top 5 players who received votes for the Heisman trophy.
Jackson: 2,144 points
Watson: 1,524
Mayfield: 361
Westbrook: 209
Peppers: 208#Sooners— Eric Bailey (@EricBaileyTW) December 11, 2016
The only issue that I have with the vote is that Watson was higher than he should have been. I expected Watson to finish second, but if a player throws 15 interceptions, I believe that should be held against them (Mayfield had 8).
The biggest benefit for the Sooners is the exposure that it continues to give the football program. Having two Heisman finalists can’t hurt on the recruiting trail, especially as Lincoln Riley and company continue to scour the nation filling a few remaining spots at WR in the class of 2017. However when it comes to the class of 2018 and beyond, this is great recruiting pitch to perspective WRs and QBs.
