After earning eight starts in ten games, sophomore Jordan Parker headed into the spring with high hopes. Expected to trot onto the field opposite Jordan Thomas at the cornerback position, Parker’s spring came to an early close. Just days before the annual Spring Game, the rising defensive star suffered a set back. A stress fracture in his left foots sidelined the corner while opening the door for another youngster. But who?
The most obvious candidate in my opinion is early enrollee and 4-star recruit, Justin Broiles out of John Marshall HS in Oklahoma City. At 5-10, 167-pounds, the recent high school graduate could put on a few more pounds the catch the rest of the cornerbacks on the roster. Touted as a player who possesses the ability to explode toward the ball, Broiles is never one to play out of control. However, the youngster excels in zone coverage. Able to read the quarterback, the true freshman often times recognizes a receiving route beating the receiver to the ball. This kid could become one of the most dangerous playmakers in the secondary given the opportunity.
Looking to compete for playing time, Parnell Motley stands out as another prospect. With a year of experience in the system and 11 games under his belt, Motley never received a starting nob in 2016. Now with Parker taking a seat, the chance to showcase his talents has finally be afforded to him. Speaking highly of the effort Motley gives each day, Kerry Cooks said, ““I think Motley is a very talented kid, but he was probably the rawest of the three corners that we had last year. But I think that he set his mind to come in, and he’s competing for a starting job, which is good because that pushes not just Jordan Parker, but it pushes (Jordan Thomas). … He’s on his game right now. He’s probably the guy that’s leading in PBU’s and interceptions. These last four or five practices, he’s always been around the ball, which I really wouldn’t have said that about him last year.”
The talent is certainly there but the question remains: who will star in Saturday’s Spring Game? Make sure to leave us your opinion in the comments section below!
