Baker Mayfield planting the flag at midfield of Ohio Stadium has become a sub story to the Sooners convincing 31-16 win over Ohio State, in Columbus, on Saturday night. On Monday the Heisman front-runner issued an apology saying that he didn’t mean any disrespect. While some Oklahoma fans took issue with the fact that Mayfield apologized, but there appears to be a second side to the story.
As reported first on Yahoo, Ian Fitzsimmons, of ESPN’s Freddie and Fitz, Mayfield had his fill of a set of drunken Ohio State fans that had been heckling him and told them he was going to lead Sooners back from a 10-3 deficit.
“There were a group of Buckeye fans that were beyond over-served,” Fitzsimmons said, “these guys are just wearing [Mayfield] out.”
“[Mayfield] turns around and goes ‘Get ready, I’m about to hang six on you bleeping bleepers.’ He goes, leads them right down the field. Score’s tied at 10 and he goes right to the bench, stands up on the bench, and just lets the Buckeyes fans behind him that were giving to Baker, he turns at them and says, ‘You like that one? I got three or four more that’s coming up. Get ready.'”

We know how the rest of the story goes as Mayfield 27-35 for 386 yards and three second half touchdowns. Following the game, Mayfield had his flag planting ceremony which, if the story is true, appears to have even more vindication now.
