As Elimination Saturday rolls on so do the Oklahoma Sooners. Fresh off a 2-0 defeat of Arizona State, that sent the Sun Devils packing, OU is facing a very familiar opponent in the evening round of elimination games.
The Sooners will move to the evening session of Elimination Saturday where the Florida Gators are waiting on them. Oklahoma and Florida faced each other in last year’s championship series. The opening game of that series was a 17-inning marathon, that was still being talked about as the two teams returned to Oklahoma City this year, and the second game delivered OU a national championship.
Thought to have possibly been in line to meet up in the championship series once again in 2018. The Sooners and Gators will have to settle for a high-stakes elimination game with the Washington Huskies waiting on Sunday.
The Gators hammered Georgia 11-3 in their opener of the Women’s College World Series. In that game three Gator batters went yard, including Aleshia Ocasio who was also the starting pitcher.
Amanda Lorenz leads a powerful Florida lineup with a batting average of .420 and 61 RBI on the year. Nicole DeWitt is batting .331 on the year and has a team-high 14 home runs. Jaimie Hoover is the third Gators batter with an average north of .300. She’s batting .324 on the season.
With Kelly Barnhill taking the loss to UCLA on Friday night, it’s reasonable that Florida will go back to Ocasio for the Oklahoma game.
Both have been fantastic from the circle this year. Barnhill is sporting a 1.05 ERA on the year and Ocasio is at 1.44. Barnhill took the loss to the Bruins but struck out 13 batters in the process. Ocasio fanned 7 Georgia batters in Thursday’s five-inning run rule.
First pitch between the Sooners and Gators is set for 6:00 tonight. The game will be televised on the ESPN Networks.
