Giselle “G” Juarez was dominant from the pitching circle and Sydney Romero was clutch from the plate are Oklahoma edged past Texas 3-1 in the series opener Thursday night.
As if any contest featuring the Sooners and Longhorns needed an extra reason to be an epic match up, the two enter the weekend as the Big 12’s two highest ranked teams. Oklahoma moved to #1 in both polls this week and Texas is #10/11.
As Juarez was dominating the Longhorn batting order, in what has become a routine outing for her, OU was limited offensively as well. The Sooners finally got to Texas pitcher Miranda Elish, in the top of the 5th, when Romero blasted a 2-RBI single through the right side to score Eliyah Flores and Grace Lyons.
The Sooners added another run in the top of the seventh when Kylie Lundberg doubled to right center field to score pinch-runner Audrie LaValley.
Juarez took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh but Texas still had a rally left. A wild pitch allowed Tuesday Dermargosian to put the Longhorns on the board. Then, with the tying run at the plate, Lyons came up with potentially the defensive play of the year when her diving catch sealed a 3-1 Sooner victory.
Juarez went the distance for Oklahoma, allowing just the single run, off five hits, and striking out ten Texas batters.
The second game in the series is schedule for a 6:00 PM first pitch on Friday night.
