Texas Tech Red Raiders at Oklahoma Sooners | Key Defensive Players

Jumping in to conference play, the Oklahoma Sooners are set to host the Texas Tech Red Raiders in Norman over the course of the weekend. Although the visiting team will be without Alan Bowman, the starting quarterback, there are a few other playmakers on the field. Those dynamic individuals will challenge this Sooner defense still attempting to define themselves under Alex Grinch. Here are a couple key players on the defensive side of the ball.

Parnell Motley | CB

Throughout the first three games of the season, Parnell Motley proved worthy of national attention. Ranked at the top of the list in certain statistical categories, expectations are once again on the rise for the cornerback. Assuming a starting role, Motley may draw a difficult task as TTU’s T.J. Vaster steps onto the field. Reeling in 18 catches for 246 yards alongside two scores, the receivers poses a threat simply due to his stature. Standing 6-6 on the program, Vasher leads the program in receiving yards and appears primed for his best season to date. Utilizing the larger frame, Vasher easily shields defenders while high-pointing the ball. Previously, this set of Oklahoma defenders have not faired too well against receivers eclipsing the 6-4 mark in terms of height. Will this weekend provide a different story line?

Jalen Redmond | DE

Clearly one of the most talented players on the field, Jalen Redmond has accounted for two sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss through three games. An aggressive play style combined with technique and sheer determination makes the defensive end a difficult pairing for any offensive lineman. However, Redmond’s role might change slightly as Texas Tech will utilize two quarterbacks over the weekend. Jett Duffey is known for his ability to scramble and make plays with his feet. Yet, the signal caller can throw the ball when given an opportunity. On the other hand, we have very little information on Jackson Tyner. Depending upon which player in under center may determine the play calling for the Sooner defense. Regardless, Redmond will be asked to contain Duffey or hurry Tyner in order to impact the game.
