The Oklahoma Sooners have excelled on the offensive side of the ball thanks to the recruiting efforts of Lincoln Riley. However, the defense has struggled to produce at the same level. Placing a priority on the defensive side of the ball, the program reeled in a few top recruits before hiring Alex Grinch to spearhead the effort. Now the tides are once again changing.
On Wednesday night, Ryan Watts decommitted from the University of Oklahoma. Initially, the 4-star cornerback announced his intentions to play for the Sooners back in April of this year. The verbal pledge failed to ward off potential suitors — more specifically Ohio State. Previously making the journey to Columbus at the end of September, Rivals pegs the Buckeyes as the new front runner for the talents of Watts.
Following the news, Oklahoma continues to hold second ranked recruiting class in the Big 12 for the 2020 cycle. Yet, you can bet the duo of Riley and Grinch are looking for a big score to up the talent level on the defensive side of the ball.
