OU is 6-1 all-time against the Mean Green and has won the last six meetings. Tonight’s matchup is the first meeting between the schools in Denton. All seven previous contests have taken place in Oklahoma.
The Sooners have defeated the Mean Green in Norman each of the last two seasons, including a 73-57 win in 2018. OU is 3-0 against UNT during the Kruger era.
On The Road Again…
Oklahoma heads south of the Red River for its first true road game of the 2019-20 season when the Sooners face North Texas. The Sooners are 3-1 outside of Norman this season. Despite Thursday being OU’s first road game, its trio of neutral-court wins were all played in enemy territory. Oklahoma defeated Minnesota in Sioux Falls, S.D. (15 miles from the Minnesota border), Oregon State in Portland, Ore., and Missouri in Kansas City, Mo. The Sooners went 3-0 in nonconference road games last season.
Tonight’s matchup is a homecoming game for freshman guard De’Vion Harmon, who grew up in nearby Corinth, Texas, and attended Guyer High School in Denton – roughly seven miles from the UNT campus. As a senior at Guyer last season, Harmon averaged 20.3 points, 5.0 assists and 4.4 rebounds. He was named the Texas District 6A Co-MVP in 2019, 2018 and 2017.
The Spark Plug
Junior guard Austin Reaves has led Oklahoma in scoring to start the season. Through seven games the Wichita State transfer is averaging team highs of 17.0 points and 2.6 assists along with 5.4 rebounds (second on team). His 17.0 points per game ranks fifth in the Big 12 and second among the conference’s newcomers.
The Sooners are off to their sixth start with a 6-1 record or better during the Lon Kruger era. OU has begun the year at least 6-1 in four of the last five seasons.
Leading The Way
Oklahoma was the only Big 12 team to claim three wins over teams from a major conference in November.
OU leads the Big 12 in free throw percentage, making 76.6% of its shots from the foul stripe. The Sooners shot their free throws at a 69.7% rate in 2018-19.
Oklahoma is the only Big 12 school with three players ranked in the top 15 of the league’s scoring leaders. Junior guard Austin Reaves is ranked fifth with 17.0 points per game while senior forward Kristian Doolittle is 13th with 14.0 and junior forward Brady Manek is in 14th averaging 13.7.
Kristian Doolittle is the only Big 12 player averaging 14 points and eight rebounds (8.7) per game. He’s also contributing 2.3 assists and 1.5 steals on average.
