Patty Gasso Adds Power-Hitting Transfer To Arsenal

Patty Gasso and her Oklahoma Sooners aren’t looking to loosen their strangle hold on the Big 12 anytime in the near future. The Sooners were marching towards a ninth consecutive conference championship, and 15th overall, when the 2020 season was shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gasso’s squad only featured three seniors in 2020 but the young group was still making waves and looking dominant. With the news that all three seniors were returning next year, thanks to the NCAA granting spring athletes an extra year, the 2021 season could easily see the Sooners back in Oklahoma City for another national title run. However, OU announced over the weekend that they’ve sweetened the pot a little more.

“We are thrilled to have Jana join the Sooners this upcoming season,” Gasso said on Friday. “She brings valuable experience, athleticism and a very powerful bat. She is made with the ‘championship mindset’ that we live by and Jana will help the Sooners continue to be one of the best programs in the country.”

The Sooners will benefit from having Johns both at the plate and on the infield. She set numerous South Carolina program records including a tie for most home runs in a season in 2019 (15), to go with 56 hits, 50 runs and 44 RBIs.

She’s a power hitter who isn’t bad with a glove either. As a freshman, Johns set the fielding percentage record for a Gamecock third baseman (.978) and registered the most assists for a USC third baseman in program history with 151.

Johns started every game of her South Carolina career at third base. The Calhoun, Ga., product has hit 25 home runs, driven in 98 runs and holds a slash line of .301/.444/.577 in her collegiate career. She’ll arrive to Norman with two years of eligibility remaining.

“I am so thankful and excited to join the OU family,” Johns said. “I chose OU because I love how the culture and values align with mine. I can’t wait to play in front of such a great fan base and for this coaching staff. Having the opportunity to join such an amazing program and compete for a national championship is something I’ve looked forward to my whole life. Boomer Sooner!”
