Oklahoma had fallen behind Iowa State 3-0 at home and needed something to get the crowd, and the team, fired up. He knew just what to do. How about a fake-reverse flea-flicker? The result was a 75-yard touchdown pass from Baker Mayfield to Dimitri Flowers.
As we’ve seen over and over during the last five years, Riley seemed to have just the right play call for just the right situation. When asked on Thursday, during a media Zoom conference, what his favorite call has been this was the first one that he mentioned.
“The one to Dimitri Flowers in the Iowa State game in 2015,” Riley said.
Not only did the touchdown put the crowd in the game, drastically changing the atmosphere in the stadium, but it also launched a run of three consecutive touchdowns to put OU comfortably in front of Iowa State 21-3.
Oklahoma went on to win the game by a final score of 52-16. Mayfield threw for 342 yards and 3 touchdowns in the game. Flowers was second on the team in receiving yards, with 81, behind Sterling Shepard’s 94. All three were involved in the flea-flicker play.
