The Oklahoma State Cowboys put together their most impressive win of the season on Saturday when they defeated the no. 16 Baylor Bears 36-25 in Waco. They had impressive performances in every aspect of the game, and as a result, a couple of Cowboys were named as winners of weekly Big 12 awards.
Freshman Jaden Nixon was named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week and Big 12 Co-Newcomer of Week because of his work as a kickoff returner. Nixon racked up 131 yards on kickoff returns, which included a 98-yard return for a touchdown to open up the second half.
Nixon is a backup running back, playing behind Dominic Richardson, so he hasn’t seen a lot of action in the offense this season, but his athleticism as displayed on special teams proves that he’s a capable up and comer. Expect to see him featured at various points moving forward.
On the defensive side of the ball, defensive back Jason Taylor II picked up the Big 12’s Co-Defensive Player of the Week award because of his game-sealing interception late in Oklahoma State’s win over Baylor. Taylor just narrowly snagged the interception and tapped his toes inbounds to secure possession of the ball, and it was all over for the Bears after that.
With Oklahoma State currently in the driver seat to make another appearance in the Big 12 Championship, expect the Cowboys to see many more awards come their way as the season progresses.
