Buckle up because the next few weeks are going to be a crazy for Oklahoma fans. The Sooners are just a few days out from learning their bowl destination and then they’ll need to determine who will be available to play in the bowl game. Two key players who’s availability is suddenly in jeopardy are running back Eric Gray and receiver Theo Wease.
Gray has accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl, thus officially ending his career at OU. Coming off the best season of his career, Gray ran for 1,364 yards, at a pace of 6.4 yards per carry, and 11 touchdowns this season, while also hauling in 33 catches for 229 yards.
For his career Gray has a total of 3,087 rushing yards (5.47 YPC) and 827 receiving yards with 26 total touchdowns. Undoubtedly, a trip to the Senior Bowl is a first step towards the NFL and means that the Tennessee transfer is done after two seasons in Norman. He definitely saved his best for last though. The only question is, was Lubbock our last time to see him in the crimson and cream or will we get to see him in the bowl game?
After saying earlier in the week that he’s yet to make up his mind on his future, receiver Theo Wease has now reached a decision. On Wednesday the redshirt junior (with two years of eligibility left) announced that he is entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer.
After missing most of the 2021 season with an injury, Wease caught 19 passes for 378 yards and four touchdowns in 2022. His best season as a Sooner was 2020 when he caught 37 passes for 530 yards and four touchdowns.
Neither of these decisions are surprising. This is the second time for Wease to be in the portal and it pretty much guarantees he’ll not be around for the bowl game. Eric Gray is capitalizing on the momentum from his terrific season. You really can’t blame him for jumping on the opportunity, especially after seeing Kennedy Brooks go undrafted following three consecutive collegiate seasons in which he rushed for a thousand yards or more. This is absolutely a “strike why the iron is hot” type of moment for Gray.
Sophomore defensive back Jordan Mukes has also announced that he’ll be entering the transfer portal. The former Choctaw, Oklahoma prospect will have three years of eligibility. A member of Oklahoma’s 2020 recruiting class, Mukes was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 28 safety in the nation and the No. 5 player from the state of Oklahoma.
