MLB Best Bet For August 14, 2023 | Pirates vs. Mets

We didn’t end last week on the hot streak that we had hoped to. After hitting a trifecta on Saturday, we went 0-2-1 on Sunday, dropping our record for the week to 11-9-1 and a negative return of -$1.59. It was nowhere close to being a great week but also a long way from being completely disastrous. Through two weeks of the month of August we’re in the hole, but it’s a shallow hole that can easily be made up with a good week. Hopefully that starts now with Pittsburgh (53-65) at the New York Mets (53-65).

WeekRecordNet
July 31 – August 611-10$-2.86
August 7 – 13 11-9-1$-1.59
We’re 22-19-1 on the month and $-4.45 in earnings

The Pitchers

New York’s Carlos Carrasco (3-6, 6.42 ERA) has faced his struggles from the mound recently. His his last five games he’s surrendered an average of 4.6 earned runs per game. He hasn’t collected a win since July 6th and has only made it through five innings twice in the last five appearances.

The Pirates are slated to throw Quinn Priester (2-1, 8.75 ERA) who has faced his own set of struggles. He does have two wins in his last five appearances but has also surrendered an average of 4.6 earned runs per appearance during that stretch. He’s made it through five innings three times in his last five appearances on the mound but the last two have seen him exit after the fourth inning.

The Lineups

Jack Suwinski and Bryan Reynolds continue to dominate Pittsburgh’s lineup. Suwinski leads the team in home runs (21), while Reynolds paces the Pirates with a .270 batting average and 56 RBI. The Pirates have crossed home plate 23 times over the last five games.

For the Mets it’s Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo who power the offense. Alonso has blasted 35 home runs, and plated 87 RBI, while Nimmo is batting .258 on the season. The Mets have scored 13 runs over the last five games.

The Streaks

The Pirates have lost four of their last five games, while New York’s 7-6 over the Braves, on Sunday, snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Odds

Mets -1.5

Mets on the moneyline -135

O/U 9.5

I rarely pick the over but I’m going with it tonight as my best bet. These two teams have been giving up runs like crazy and neither is putting a strong option on the mound as a starter. Both teams are in bad spots here, but I think the Mets may have it a little worse, despite being the home team. We can get +115 odds on the Pirates with the moneyline and they’re -160 against a +1.5 run spread, which means Vegas believes this could come down to a one-score difference. I’ll take the over, the Pirates on the ML and the Pirates +1.5.
