From Cade to Chaos: Oklahoma State Seeks Steady Hand After Boynton Exit

Oklahoma State basketball is in a state of flux following the departure of head coach Mike Boynton. After failing to reach the NCAA Tournament in four of his five seasons, Boynton and the Cowboys mutually agreed to part ways. This leaves a significant void to fill in Stillwater, and the search for his successor is already underway.

Boynton’s Legacy: A Mixed Bag

OSU hasn’t advanced beyond the first round of the NCAA Tournament since 2009, hasn’t been to the Sweet 16 since 2005, and the last Final Four appearance was 2004. While Boynton maintained some success, his tenure was marked by inconsistency. The lone NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021 came with Cade Cunningham, the eventual NBA No. 1 overall pick, leading the charge. The following season saw a postseason ban due to NCAA violations, and this year’s team finished a disappointing 12-20.

What the Cowboys Need

Oklahoma State needs a coach who can not only recruit high-caliber talent but also develop it into a cohesive unit. The ability to navigate the ever-changing landscape of the NCAA Transfer Portal will also be crucial. Fan engagement and a return to consistent winning are paramount for the program’s future.

Potential Candidates:

Several names could be on Oklahoma State’s shortlist:

  • Assistants on the Rise: Look for athletic departments to explore the possibility of poaching successful assistants from established programs. Names like Corey Williams (Auburn), Jeremy Case (Kansas), or Erik Pastrana (Georgia) could be intriguing options.
  • Head Coaches Looking for a New Challenge: Experienced coaches with a proven track record, like Dusty May (FAU) or Paul Mills (Wichita State), might be interested in a program with a strong basketball tradition.
  • Oklahoma State Alumni: I think the Doug Gottleib idea is just ridiculous, but bringing in someone from the Eddie Sutton Tree is intriguing. Stephen Graham, a member of the 2004 team, is an assistant for the NBA’s Denver Nuggets. Of course, Scott Sutton is a current member of the Cowboy coaching staff.

The Road Ahead

The Oklahoma State athletic department has a critical decision to make. They need to find a coach who can not only win but also build a sustainable program that competes at the highest level. The upcoming coaching carousel promises to be interesting, and Oklahoma State’s choice will shape the future of Cowboy basketball.
