The No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners (27-1) continued their rampage through the Big 12 conference with a resounding 11-1 victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders (21-8, 2-4 Big 12) on Sunday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock, Texas. The win secured a series sweep for the Sooners and solidified their perfect conference record at 6-0.
In the process, Oklahoma Softball head coach Patty Gasso became the first Big 12 coach, regardless of sport, to earn her 400th conference.
May Stifles Red Raider Offense Early
Oklahoma starting pitcher Nicole May set the tone for the dominant victory, allowing only one hit and striking out six batters. Her strong performance shut down the Texas Tech offense and provided a solid foundation for the Sooners’ explosive offense.
Offensive Explosion in the Second
The Sooners wasted no time putting pressure on the Red Raiders, scoring twice in the top of the first inning. Cydney Sanders and Ella Parker both drove in runs during the opening frame and then Oklahoma’s full offense onslaught would come later.
OU added two more runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and then substantially put the game out of reach with a six-run seventh inning.
Brito Bombs
Alyssa Brito (3-for-5, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI) homered twice as part of a three-hit day and Tiare Jennings (1-for-5, R, HR, 3 RBI) launched a three-run home run to close the series with a 12-RBI weekend
Shutout Bid Falls Short, But Dominant Win Secured
While Nicole May’s bid for a shutout was broken early in the game, she still delivered a dominant performance, striking out six batters in six innings of work to improve her season record to 9-0. Karlie Keeney came on in relief and closed out the game to secure the victory.
Key Performers
Alyssa Brito led the offensive charge for the Sooners, going 3-for-5 with the two home runs and three RBIs. Avery Hodge (2-for-2, 2 R) and Rylie Boone (2-for-4, R, 3 RBI) each recorded multi-hit efforts.
Looking Ahead
The Sooners host a midweek matchup on Wednesday against UT Arlington.
