Sunday we took a look at Oklahoma’s offense for 2024 and asked three critical questions. In a true glass is half full type moment, we can take the same information and explain why there’s a reason for confidence.
While Oklahoma’s offensive transition in 2024 does present challenges, these can also be looked at as reasons for optimism. Here are three key areas where the Sooners can find success:
1. Jackson Arnold’s Potential for Growth:
Though his late-season 2023 performance against Arizona was a mixed bag, Jackson Arnold showcased undeniable talent. Throwing for 361 yards and two touchdowns demonstrates his ability to lead the offense. The off-season provides valuable time for development under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Seth Littrell. Littrell’s offensive scheme emphasizes a quick pace and a focus on the passing game, potentially playing perfectly to Arnold’s strengths. With a year of experience under his belt and a system that suits his skillset, Arnold has the potential to make a significant leap in 2024.
2. Veteran Receiving Corps Provides Stability:
Despite the departure of 2023’s most consistent pass catcher, Drake Stoops, Oklahoma’s receiving unit boasts a core of experienced players. Jalil Farooq, Andrel Anthony, and Nic Anderson return, providing familiar targets for Arnold. These players understand the Sooner offense and have proven their ability to make plays. Additionally, the acquisition of Purdue transfer Deion Burks adds another established weapon to the mix. Burks brings a track record of production, further bolstering the receiving group. This blend of experience and talent gives the Sooners a reliable receiving corps that can be a legitimate vertical threat.
3. Coaching Continuity with Seth Littrell:
The arrival of a new offensive coordinator often brings uncertainty. However, with the hiring of Seth Littrell, Oklahoma benefits from a coach who understands the program’s culture and offensive philosophy. Littrell spent seven years as the head coach at North Texas, where he implemented a high-scoring offense similar to the one Oklahoma is known for. His familiarity with the system and the players allows for a smoother transition and quicker implementation of his offensive vision. Littrell’s experience and offensive philosophy are a strong foundation for the Sooners’ offensive success in 2024.
While there are questions surrounding the offensive line and the running game, Oklahoma has a strong foundation to build upon. Arnold’s development, the veteran receiving corps, and Littrell’s leadership all inspire confidence in the Sooners’ ability to adapt and thrive offensively in the face of change.
