Oklahoma’s Explosive Offense Ready to Unleash? Examining Strengths and Potential Weaknesses Against Temple

Oklahoma enters the 2024 season with high expectations, led by quarterback Jackson Arnold. While the offense showed flashes of brilliance in the Alamo Bowl against Arizona, they struggled with turnovers and consistency. The Sooners have made several changes to the offense, including a rebuilt offensive line, and they will be looking to improve their performance in 2024.

As the Sooners prepare for their season opener against Temple on Friday night, it’s time to take a closer look at their offensive strengths and potential weaknesses.

Strengths

  1. Rising Star Quarterback: Jackson Arnold has shown flashes of brilliance and is expected to take a significant step forward in his development. His ability to make accurate throws, read defenses, and extend plays will be crucial for the Sooners’ success.
  2. Talented Receiving Corps: Oklahoma boasts a talented group of wide receivers, including Nic Anderson, Brennen Thompson, and Jalil Farooq. These players have the potential to make big plays and stretch the field.
  3. Improving Defense: A strong defense can take pressure off the offense, allowing them to play more freely. Oklahoma’s defense has shown signs of improvement, and if they continue to play well, it could benefit the offense.

Potential Weaknesses

  1. Offensive Line Under Construction: The offensive line is a major question mark for the Sooners, as they have several new starters. The battle at right tackle between Jake Taylor and Spencer Brown is still ongoing, and if Brown wins, he could be the fourth transfer to start on the line. The ability of the offensive line to protect Jackson Arnold and create running lanes will be crucial for the offense’s success.
  2. Running Back Depth: While Jovantae Barnes and Gavin Sawchuk are expected to be fully healthy and provide a strong duo at running back, the depth behind them is a bit of a concern. Running back injuries seem to be as frequent as conference titles in Norman and the Sooners are unproven behind Barnes and Sawchuk. Sam Franklin was a star at Tennesse-Martin but that was FCS and there’s no guarantee that it’ll translate to the FBS level. Surrounding him on the depth chart is a redshirt and a true freshman.
  3. Turnovers: Oklahoma struggled with turnovers last season, including six turnovers in the bowl game against Arizona. They will need to improve in this area to give themselves a better chance of winning games.

Overall, the Oklahoma offense has the potential to be explosive in 2024. However, they will need to address their weaknesses on the offensive line and running back positions. If they can do that, they have the talent to compete for an SEC championship.
