A Historic Day: Date Set for Unveiling the Patty Gasso Statue at Love’s Field

The University of Oklahoma is making history on Friday, September 13th with the unveiling of a statue honoring legendary softball coach Patty Gasso. This marks a monumental occasion not just for the Sooners program, but for all of college athletics. Gasso will be the first female coach or athlete at OU to be immortalized in bronze, a testament to her incredible achievements and lasting impact on the sport.

The public ceremony will begin at 4:00 pm in front of Gate 1 at Love’s Field. Fans are encouraged to attend and celebrate Coach Gasso’s remarkable career. A livestream of the event will also be available for those who can’t be there in person.

A Legacy of Excellence

Gasso’s influence on the OU softball program is undeniable. In her 31 years as head coach, she has transformed the Sooners into a national powerhouse. Under her leadership, OU has secured an astonishing eight national championships, including an unprecedented four consecutive titles. This level of dominance is unmatched in NCAA softball history.

Beyond the national titles, Gasso’s dedication has resulted in 17 appearances in the Women’s College World Series and reaching the postseason in all years except the canceled 2020 season. Her career coaching record stands at a staggering 1,676-411-3, making her the winningest active coach in NCAA history.

More Than Wins

Gasso’s impact extends far beyond wins and championships. Her leadership has fostered a culture of excellence within the program. Numerous Sooner players under her guidance have gone on to achieve national recognition, including multiple USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year recipients. Gasso has also nurtured academic success within the team, with players racking up 180 academic all-conference awards, including 23 Academic All-Americans.

A Day of Celebration

The statue unveiling ceremony will be a chance for the Sooner Nation to come together and celebrate Coach Gasso’s incredible career. Fans will have the opportunity to hear speeches from Gasso herself, alongside OU President Joseph Harroz Jr., Athletic Director Joe Castiglione, and former OU softball players.
