Oklahoma’s offensive performance against Texas last Saturday could very well be the low point of Brent Venables’ tenure at Oklahoma. The Sooners were atrocious on the offensive side of the ball in what is always the biggest game of the season. It begs the question, is it time to start making changes on the offensive coaching staff? If so, the who?
What started out as a podcast to recap the 2024 Red River Rivalry turned into a debate on the merits of if certain coaches to remain with the program after seven weeks of terrible offensive football.
More than ever, we’d love to know your thoughts.

With all the injuries that have occurred, most on the offensive side, I don’t think that the coordinator should be fired at this point.
I imagine all of those who wanted Gabriel to leave last year are wishing he was back. I certainly wish he was still at OU!
That was a good podcast. I hated for it to end. I tended to agree more with Caleb.
I think the problem with the offense is that we can’t, and won’t be able to establish the run, and we have a young QB that needs more time to find the open man. Both of those problems are a result of a non talented and banged up line. That position coach BB is responsible for his inventory. If he doesn’t have depth to fill in the gaps then that’s his fault.
Emmett Jones has 4 star players, young 4 star depth. The reason the receivers aren’t having great success is because nobody has to care about our running game, they can just play like every down is 3rd and long.
Littrell has not shown that he’s a good play caller, the closest they got to scoring a TD was the 3rd play of the game on the deep throw. And he never went there again.
We can’t fire anyone right now, Joe C needs to be searching for replacements on the offensive staff. And a QB coach. It needs to be someone that can develop players. For Littrell to not have developed Arnold is on him, now they are just relying on Hawkins natural ability to scramble out of the pass rush and dump the ball to the closest guy to him.
I’m afraid we are going to see a mass exodus in the portal.
As far as the tight ends, that’s a position that requires the players to be able to block at the line of scrimmage. Our TE’s don’t get patted on the back because they can catch a ball, I expect them to be able to, but when your best TE, time and time again runs right by the guy he’s supposed to block, or lays a week block on him and we get no gain, then that player is a liability. That’s what we have at TE. They may as well move him to wide receiver and bring in a player that can help this crappy line open some holes.
Who is the leader on offense? We don’t have one. That’s also on Littrell, BB & JJF.
As far as penalties, that’s on the coaches too, as a Dolphins fan I remember Don Shula’s teams were always the least penalized in the league and the Raiders were always the most. Yes it is on the coaches, it’s been proven. It’s called discipline and it needs to be taught.
We are not getting better on offense, broken plays, players running the wrong way after the snap, missed blocks at the line of scrimmage and down field, these were all very apparent in the first couple of games and continue to be now 1/2 way through the season. This is poor coaching. I don’t care if they have to run the single wing, we need to establish some sort of a run game, our run game coordinators are all failing us.
Venables has our defense playing good, they are constantly getting put in bad situations by a terrible offense. I want OU to be known as a great defense team way more than an “air raid” team, as I heard Littrell’s offense described. I’ve seen air raid, and I liked it at the time, but the game in the SEC is different and we are not preparing our team to compete against the SEC on the offensive side of the ball.
