The Sooners have addressed the need to bolster their tight end room. Oklahoma has secured a key addition via the transfer portal. Carson Kent, a former Kennesaw State standout, announced his commitment to the program, bringing much-needed talent and experience to the rebuilding of the Sooner offense.
Kent, a two-year starter for the Owls, brings a unique perspective to the Sooners. As a former walk-on at Kennesaw State, Kent understands the value of hard work and dedication. His journey mirrors that of many successful Oklahoma players who have risen from humble beginnings.
“Him (Brent Venables) and I kind of resonated in a way, just how he had to fight for a spot and basically ‘crawl on’ at Kansas State,” Kent told OUInsider.com. “I’m a walk-on. I walked on at Kennesaw State; that was my only walk-on opportunity coming out of high school, because I was an undersized kid. That means I was under-recruited. No one was willing to give me a shot except Kennesaw State, and I took that opportunity and ran with it. I took a PWO and redshirted my first year, and the last two years, I was able to start. Just hearing his story and knowing the history of Oklahoma walk-ons, seeing Baker [Mayfield]’s walk-on trophy in the middle of the opening hallway, it was something really cool.”
The Sooners have the possibility for a significant upgrade at the tight end position with Kent. An All-CUSA selection, the 6-4/240 tight end, is bringing much-needed talent and experience to the Sooners’ offense.
Kent possesses the size and athleticism to be a significant contributor in Norman. He chose Oklahoma over a host of other suitors, including West Virginia, Wake Forest, and James Madison.
During his time at Kennesaw State, Kent showcased his abilities as a reliable target, recording 18 receptions for 217 yards and three touchdowns in 2024. His 12.1 yards per catch demonstrate his potential as a playmaker.
Kent’s arrival is particularly significant given the departure of Bauer Sharp from the Oklahoma roster. With two years of eligibility remaining, Kent has the potential to become a key weapon in the Sooners’ offensive arsenal. His versatility and experience could make him a valuable asset for the Oklahoma offense. He’ll enter 2025 as Oklahoma’s most experienced tight end, but he will still have to compete with Kaden Helms and Davon Mitchell for playing time.
