Oklahoma Sooners Softball Preview: A New Era Dawns on the Infield

The Oklahoma Sooners are entering a new era in softball, aiming to defend their national championship title with a roster featuring a blend of returning talent and exciting newcomers. After graduating a legendary senior class, the Sooners have undergone a significant roster turnover, leading to intriguing position battles across the diamond, particularly within the infield.

Catching: Emerling Solidifies Starting Role

North Carolina transfer Isabela Emerling appears poised to anchor the Oklahoma infield as the starting catcher. Emerling, a proven offensive force, recorded top-six program single-season marks in home runs and RBIs during her time with the Tar Heels. In 2024, she started 47 of 48 games, batting .323 with 53 RBIs and 14 home runs. Her defensive prowess is equally impressive, with just three errors in 183 chances and a 26.1% caught-stealing percentage. Emerling’s offensive and defensive contributions make her a valuable asset to the Sooners and a strong candidate for the starting catching position.

First Base: Sanders Returns to Lead the Charge

Cydney Sanders returns to provide stability at first base for the Sooners. A key contributor to the 2024 championship run, Sanders brings power and strong defensive skills to the position. She recorded 15 home runs and 50 RBIs last season, while also demonstrating strong defensive abilities with just four errors in 344 chances. Sanders’ experience and leadership will be crucial for the success of the 2025 Oklahoma team.

Second Base: Competition Heats Up Between Milloy and Agbayani

The second base position is likely to be a competitive battle between freshman Tia Milloy and BYU transfer Ailana Agbayani. Agbayani, who impressed during fall ball, brings a potent offensive game to the table. She boasts a .424 career batting average and showcased her offensive prowess with a standout performance against the Sooners during the 2024 season. Milloy, a highly-touted recruit, possesses impressive athleticism and defensive skills, making her a strong contender for the starting role.

Shortstop: A Battle for Supremacy

The shortstop position is perhaps the most hotly contested position in the infield. Freshman Gabby Garcia, a highly-regarded recruit known for her elite defensive skills, has emerged as a strong contender. Garcia’s exceptional glove work could potentially shift Ailana Agbayani to second base, creating a dynamic and defensively sound infield. Fellow freshman Sid Barker also presents a viable option at shortstop, adding depth and competition to the position.

Third Base: McEnroe-Marinas Poised for a Breakout Season

Redshirt freshman Nelly McEnroe-Marinas is expected to anchor the hot corner. McEnroe-Marinas, a highly-touted recruit with exceptional defensive skills, missed the 2024 season due to injury. Her return adds a significant boost to the Sooners’ infield, providing a strong defensive presence and the potential for significant offensive contributions.

The 2025 Oklahoma Sooners infield is shaping up to be a dynamic and exciting unit. With a blend of returning talent, impactful transfers, and promising newcomers, Coach Gasso has assembled a talented group of players capable of achieving great success. The competition for starting positions will undoubtedly push each player to their full potential, ultimately strengthening the team as a whole.

  1. Agbayani is a lock to start. Either as 2nd base or short. Too skilled not to have her in the field, and their best option at leadoff. Over .400 hitter with speed and doesn’t strike out.

    1. I agree completely! Depending on what happens with the youngsters at short, she could go either way.
