Oklahoma Softball: Sooners Set for Unique Season Opener in Southern California

The Oklahoma Sooners softball team is gearing up for another exciting season, with their 2025 campaign set to begin in just over a week. Instead of their usual participation in the Mary Nutter Classic, the Sooners will embark on a unique Southern California road trip that will see them face off against mid-major programs in their home stadiums.

Sooners Open the Season on February 6 in San Diego

Oklahoma kicks off its season on February 6 with a doubleheader against California State-Northridge and San Diego State in San Diego. This marks a significant shift in the Sooners’ scheduling approach, as they move away from the traditional Mary Nutter Classic—a tournament they have participated in for the past three seasons.

A Strategic Shift: Supporting Mid-Major Programs

Head coach Patty Gasso outlined the reasoning behind this new approach. Rather than attending high-profile tournaments where revenue is controlled by organizers, the Sooners will travel directly to the campuses of San Diego State, Cal State Fullerton, Loyola Marymount, and Long Beach State. This move is designed to support mid-major programs by helping them generate revenue through ticket sales and increased attendance.

“As you start to see (name, image, and likeness) happen and the separation of programs, instead of going, and I’m sorry cause I know a lot of you like to go to Palm Springs, but it’s a very costly trip. There’s a lot of money to be made at that tournament. It’s going into different people’s pockets. What I wanted to do is go to San Diego State and help sell it out. Make them money. Then go to Cal State Fullerton, sell it out, make them money. Then go to Loyola Marymount, sell it out. They weren’t going to charge admission. I’m like, ‘I’m not coming unless you charge admission.’ Make them money. Then go back to my alma mater, Long Beach State, and make them money on Sunday.”Patty Gasso

As name, image, and likeness (NIL) and revenue-sharing agreements continue to impact college sports, Gasso is taking a proactive stance to ensure mid-major programs remain financially viable.

Roster Changes and Key Players to Watch

The Sooners enter the season with a mix of returning stars and fresh faces. While Oklahoma lost several key players from its 2024 Women’s College World Series championship team, the lineup remains formidable.

Returning Standouts:

  • Ella Parker
  • Kasidi Pickering

Key Transfers:

  • Abby Dayton (Utah)
  • Ailana Agbayani (BYU)

Dayton and Agbayani bring experience and depth to Oklahoma’s roster, ensuring the Sooners remain a powerhouse in college softball.

Sooners to Host Two Home Tournaments in February

In addition to their Southern California road trip, Oklahoma has also opted out of the Mary Nutter Classic in favor of two home tournaments at Marita Hynes Field.

First Home Tournament (Feb. 20-23):

  • Feb. 20: Abilene Christian, Wichita State
  • Feb. 21: Abilene Christian
  • Feb. 22: Bowling Green
  • Feb. 23: Tulsa

Second Home Tournament (Feb. 28-March 2):

  • Teams: UMKC, Kansas, Marshall
  • Matchups: The Sooners will play a pair of games each against UMKC and Kansas

Oklahoma Softball’s National Influence

As a four-time defending national champion, Oklahoma Softball is more than just a dominant force on the field—it’s a program shaping the future of college softball. By prioritizing financial sustainability for mid-major programs and adjusting their schedule to maximize impact, the Sooners continue to set the standard for excellence.

Final Thoughts

With a new-look roster, a strategic scheduling shift, and the same championship mindset, Oklahoma enters the 2025 season as a team to watch. Their Southern California road trip offers exciting matchups while also serving a greater purpose—strengthening the softball community.
