Kierston Deal’s Gem, Pickering’s Power Lead Sooners to 8-0 Win

On a bright and crisp afternoon in Norman, No. 2 Oklahoma softball continued its dominant start to the 2025 season, dismantling Tulsa 8-0 in five innings at Love’s Field. The Sooners improved to an impressive 11-0 record while securing their 30th consecutive home opener victory in front of a record-setting February crowd of 4,261.

Dominant Pitching Sets the Tone

Left-hander Kierston Deal took the circle for Oklahoma and delivered a masterful performance. Across four scoreless innings, she struck out four batters while allowing just two hits and one walk. Her command and poise set the foundation for another dominant Sooners outing.

Deal was particularly effective in tight situations, ending three of her four innings with swinging strikeouts, two of which stranded runners on base. She also showcased her defensive awareness, inducing a ground-ball double play in the first inning after issuing a leadoff walk.

Isabella Smith took over in the fifth inning, extending her personal scoreless streak to 16.2 innings. She retired the side with two strikeouts and a groundout, cementing Oklahoma’s fifth consecutive run-rule victory.

Parker’s Clutch Hit Opens the Scoring

After a quiet first inning, the Sooners broke through in the second, capitalizing on Tulsa’s struggles to find the strike zone. Oklahoma loaded the bases on three walks before Ella Parker delivered in the clutch. Facing a 1-2 count, Parker sent a ground ball down the first-base line. The ball took an awkward hop, skipped past Tulsa’s Paige Knight, and rolled into right field, allowing all three runners to score. The play ignited the Oklahoma offense and put the Sooners ahead 3-0.

Pickering’s Big Day at the Plate

The Sooners tacked on another run in the third inning. Kasidi Pickering, who had been searching for her rhythm at the plate to start the season, led off with a double off the right-center field wall. Ailana Agbayani then executed a textbook piece of hitting, drilling a single through the left side to drive Pickering home, extending the lead to 4-0.

In the fourth inning, Oklahoma put the game out of reach with a four-run outburst. Gabbie Garcia started things off with a double into the right-field corner before advancing to third on Abigale Dayton’s groundout. A wild pitch allowed Garcia to cross home plate, making it 5-0.

With two outs, Parker kept the rally alive with a bloop double to left-center, stretching her hitting streak to 15 games dating back to last season. Cydney Sanders then worked a walk, setting the stage for Pickering to deliver the game’s biggest blow.

On a 3-1 count, Pickering turned on a pitch and crushed it to dead center, sending the ball soaring over the outfield fence and into the shrubs behind the wall. The three-run shot gave Oklahoma an 8-0 lead and effectively sealed the game via run-rule.

Gasso Praises Team’s Execution

Despite the dominant performance, head coach Patty Gasso noted that the team took some time to settle into their offensive rhythm.

“I wanted us to start off a little bit stronger,” Gasso said. “We were hitting some balls hard early but weren’t quite breaking through. Once we got into a groove, I thought our approach at the plate improved tremendously.”

Gasso also expressed gratitude for the grounds crew, who worked tirelessly to prepare the field following a week of snow and ice in Norman.

“We were looking out there every day thinking, ‘This might not happen,’ but they were out there shoveling snow day and night,” Gasso said. “They made it possible for us to open our season at home, and I can’t thank them enough.”

Key Takeaways

  1. Pickering Finds Her Power Stroke
    • After a slow start at the plate this season, Pickering erupted with a double and a three-run home run, finishing with three RBIs.
    • She credited her success to staying locked in and making the necessary adjustments.
    • “That last at-bat, I was thinking about the pitch before that I missed,” Pickering said. “I told myself to get another good pitch to hit hard, and that’s exactly what happened.”
  2. Parker’s Hitting Streak Continues
    • Parker extended her hitting streak to 15 games dating back to last season with a two-hit performance.
    • Her aggressive baserunning turned a routine single into a double, showing her speed and awareness on the base paths.
    • “She might be deceiving because of how strong she is, but she’s also very quick,” Gasso said. “She’s a smart baserunner, and that gives us a huge advantage.”
  3. Deal Continues to Impress in the Circle
    • With four scoreless innings, Deal lowered her ERA while improving to 2-0 on the season.
    • She worked efficiently, mixing speeds and locations to keep Tulsa hitters off balance.
    • “This staff is growing every day,” Deal said. “We’re just trying to elevate everything and trust in our pitches.”
