Oklahoma Rallies to Take Down No. 11 South Carolina in Back-and-Forth SEC Opener

The Oklahoma Sooners’ SEC debut was anything but easy, but a powerful offensive performance pushed them past No. 11 South Carolina 10-9 on Friday night at Love’s Field. The high-scoring contest saw big swings from both teams, but Oklahoma’s firepower proved just enough to remain undefeated at 20-0 and secure a win in its first-ever SEC game. South Carolina, previously unbeaten, suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 20-1.

Sooners Overcome Shaky Pitching in SEC Debut

Oklahoma entered the matchup with one of the best pitching staffs in the country, but starter Kierston Deal struggled in the second inning, allowing five runs. South Carolina capitalized on OU miscues, stringing together key hits and taking advantage of three wild pitches and two errors to build an early 5-1 lead.

However, the Sooners’ powerful offense wasted no time responding. Catcher Isabela Emerling immediately cut into the deficit with a two-run blast in the bottom of the second inning. Then, in the third, freshman shortstop Gabbie Garcia delivered a three-run homer, bouncing a ball off the top of the left-field wall and into the stands to push OU ahead 6-5.

South Carolina continued to fight back, tying the game 6-6 in the fifth, but Emerling’s second home run of the night—a towering shot to right field—gave Oklahoma the lead again at 8-6. Hannah Coor’s clutch two-RBI double in the sixth extended the lead to 10-6, providing crucial insurance runs for the Sooners.

Late Drama at Love’s Field

Despite Oklahoma’s offensive outburst, the Gamecocks refused to go quietly. South Carolina’s catcher, Lexi Winters, launched a dramatic three-run homer in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 10-9, sending a nervous hush over the crowd at Love’s Field.

Right-hander Isabella Smith, who replaced Deal in the fifth, quickly reset after allowing the bomb and shut the door on South Carolina’s comeback attempt, recording the final three outs to clinch the win.

Smith finished the night with three innings pitched, allowing just one hit while walking four and striking out one. Deal, who started the game, lasted four innings, surrendering six runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out two and walking one.

Offensive Stars Shine for OU

Oklahoma’s lineup flexed its muscle in their SEC opener, tallying 10 runs on 11 hits. The Sooners scored in every inning except the fourth, proving their ability to battle back after early adversity.

  • Isabela Emerling: 2-for-2, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB
  • Gabbie Garcia: 1-for-3, HR, 3 RBI
  • Hannah Coor: 1-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI
  • Ailana Agbayani: 3-for-4, 2B, 2 R
  • Nelly McEnroe-Marinas: 2-for-3, RBI

“I think people questioned our challenges so far this season,” Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso said postgame. “Tonight showed me a lot about this team. We were uncharacteristic at times, but we responded, and that’s what matters.”

SEC Welcome: Sooners Get Pushed, But Respond

The win was significant for Oklahoma, not just because it was the program’s first SEC victory but because it showcased the team’s resilience. The Sooners had yet to face a serious challenge this season, and after falling behind early, they proved they could respond when faced with adversity.

Emerling, who has been a breakout star this season, knew the team would battle back.

“This team is special,” she said. “We knew we had the offense to respond. We’ve prepared for this moment, and it showed tonight.”

Looking Ahead: Doubleheader on Sunday

Due to inclement weather in Norman, the remainder of the series has been adjusted. The Sooners and Gamecocks will now meet in a Sunday doubleheader, with Game 2 scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT, followed by the series finale approximately 40 minutes after.

Oklahoma has a chance to make a strong early statement in its new conference by securing a series victory against a talented South Carolina squad. With the way both offenses performed in the opener, Sunday’s matchups promise to deliver more fireworks.

Stay tuned as the Sooners look to continue their perfect season and prove they belong atop the SEC.
