Agbayani’s Big Night Propels Oklahoma Past Texas in Series Opener

Under the brightest lights and in front of a record-setting crowd, Ailana Agbayani delivered a performance for the ages.

The junior standout drove in five runs, including a third-inning grand slam and an eventual game-winning double, to lead No. 4/3 Oklahoma (40-5, 14-5 SEC) to a thrilling 7-6 victory over No. 3/2 Texas (42-7, 13-6 SEC) Friday night at Love’s Field. A raucous crowd of 4,587 — a new single-game attendance record for the Sooners’ home — witnessed a classic start to a pivotal SEC series between two national title contenders.

Behind Agbayani’s heroics and a gritty complete-game effort from Sam Landry in the circle, Oklahoma outlasted a furious Texas rally to secure its 15th win over a ranked opponent this season.

Early Statement, Mid-Game Fireworks

The Sooners set the tone early, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Nelly McEnroe-Marinas sparked the rally with a double and later scored on an RBI groundout by Isabela Emerling, a sequence that hinted at the opportunistic offense to come.

An inning later, Oklahoma blew the game wide open.

Gabbie Garcia ignited a five-run third by crushing a solo home run to center, her 13th of the season, tying teammates Kasidi Pickering and McEnroe-Marinas for the team lead. Moments later, Agbayani stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered the biggest swing of the night, launching a grand slam over the left-field wall — her first home run since Feb. 16 against Baylor.

The eruption pushed the Sooners ahead 6-0, electrifying the record crowd and putting Texas on its heels.

Texas Responds with Character

But the Longhorns, who came into the weekend promising to “fight until the very last out,” lived up to their mantra.

Mia Scott put Texas on the board with a two-out solo homer in the fourth, continuing her personal tradition of delivering big swings against Oklahoma — one home run in each of her four seasons against the Sooners. After Reese Atwood drew a full-count walk, stole second, and scored on a Joley Mitchell single, the Longhorns had cut the deficit to 6-2 and seized a sliver of momentum.

Texas kept coming in the fifth. After two quick outs, the Longhorns rallied again, piecing together three hits and capitalizing on an OU error to plate three more runs and suddenly draw within one.

Agbayani Comes Through Again

Facing mounting pressure, Oklahoma turned to its clutch performer once again.

McEnroe-Marinas, who finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and two doubles, led off the bottom of the fifth with another double. After an out, Agbayani roped a shot into the left-field corner, scoring McEnroe-Marinas to give the Sooners a critical insurance run and extend the lead to 7-5.

Agbayani finished her night 3-for-3, tying a career high with five RBIs and scoring three runs, reaffirming her importance in Oklahoma’s championship chase.

Landry Shuts the Door

With the game hanging in the balance, Landry, who had battled all night, showed her mettle in the seventh.

After recording a groundout to start the inning, the Sooners’ defense faltered, allowing Texas to put runners at second and third with just one out. Oklahoma elected to intentionally walk Atwood, loading the bases but setting up force plays at every bag.

A wild pitch allowed Texas to creep within a run at 7-6, ratcheting up the tension, but Landry remained composed. On her 124th pitch of the night, the junior right-hander induced a flyout from Mitchell to end the game and strand the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

Landry finished with her 13th complete game of the season, scattering seven hits and striking out five while allowing just two earned runs. She improved to 16-3 on the year.

Key Numbers and Notable Moments

  • Six different Sooners have now hit grand slams this season, a testament to the team’s depth and power.
  • Oklahoma improved to 34-0 when scoring at least six runs and 33-0 when leading after six innings, continuing two impressive trends under head coach Patty Gasso.
  • Ella Parker reached 100 career starts and 100 career runs scored on the night, while Cydney Sanders surpassed 100 career walks.
  • The Sooners are now 4-1 in one-run games, showing they can win both blowouts and grinders.
  • Friday’s attendance shattered the previous Love’s Field record, and marked the second time in a week Texas has been involved in a record-setting crowd on the road.

For Texas, despite the loss, there were bright spots. Scott’s home run and two-RBI performance moved her into rare air with 175 career RBIs, while Atwood’s two RBIs brought her within one of second place on Texas’ single-season RBI list.

Quotes from the Dugouts

Texas head coach Mike White acknowledged Oklahoma’s fast start:
“Congratulations to Oklahoma, they played well. They hit the ball extremely well off Teagan (Kavan) and that forced us to make a change. We did fight back and made it interesting at the end, but unfortunately, we lost out on this one.”

OU’s Agbayani, meanwhile, kept the focus simple in her postgame remarks:
“We trust each other. We trust our bats, we trust our defense. And we know every game, no matter what the score is, it’s going to take all seven innings.”
